6B RELIGIOM^e Cliarlone Thursday, August 17, 2006 Churches reach out to students Continued from page 4B sion our fellowship with them on that day,” said Sandra Williams, Walls Memorial’s Christian education director. “Kids really need a positive situation and they need to know that there is a higher spiritual being that they need in their lives.” The Children’s Church Min istry of Steele Creek AME Zion Church at 1500 Shopton Road, is also hosting a back to school event Saturday. Gethsemane Baptist Church, 565 Jetton Street in Davidson, will host the “06 Back 2 School Break-Out” fes tival, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the church. This year’s themes are: “P.A.S.S. - Parents And Students Succeeding” and “The Paths to Success are God, Education and Fellow ship.” There wiU be entertain ment, games for kids, food and school supplies. Free to the public. In 2002, the National Coun cil of Churches created a pro gram that ui^ed pastors to support public education, not ing that 90 percent of children in the U.S. attend public . schools. Bob Edgar, the NCC’s gen eral secretary, said “public schools are our nation’s largest social institution.” Edgar says that failing schools are a reflection of soci ety failing by not providing them with tools they need to succeed. “Our biggest concern,” said Jan Resseger, minister for public education and a mem ber of the NCC, “is to work for excellence for all school chil dren in the country.” • Resseger said local mem bers of the faith community can help the cause of educa tion by contacting their con gressional representatives and telling them how No Child Left Behind is affecting teachers and students. Resseger said though the leg islation is billed as something that fits all communities, it does not. “We’re really hopping that as the school year begins that local people will tell that story,” she said.
