One of his autobiographi cal paintings is called "I Use To Be Somebody.” Joan Vitale of the Charlotte Art League said, “Charles was like a good black Jew” for his skill at kibitzing, talk ing and giving advice. He was knowledgeable about the war in Iraq, politics and history. Aisha Dew returns to Charlotte Continued from page ID watching her write, direct and create on a daily basis,” Dew said. But the nurturing didn’t stop there. “My first director at Afro American Children's The ater, Doris Frazier, taught me how to break out of shy ness and perform on stage,” Dew remembers. "Scott Milter, who was at Chil dren’s Theater when I was a teen taught by example the importance of providing programming that had the ability to reach everyone and effect change, even if with only one person.” Dew took that knowledge and nurturing and went on to build an enviable career as a producer and highly regarded arts administrator. She founded the Hall Neigh borhood House Performing Arts Program and was regional director of Wolf Trap Early Learning through the Arts, both in Bridgeport. In addition, she produced and directed 15 shows, including "The Wiz,” "Grease,” “Antigone,” “Peter Pan,” “Alice in Wonderland,” "The Trials of Teendoom,” “Mufaro’s Beautiful Daugh ters,” and “Shut Up: I'm Talking : Exaggerations of My Everyday Life.” Spike Lee’s top 10 joints: So many movies, so little space Continued from page ID Oscar for the epic “Malcolm X?” In his career, Lee has only been nominated for two Academy Awards. That is a travesty, but I digress. So, what are Lee’s top 10 films? Here’s what I think: 10. "She’s Gotta Have It” (1986) This was Lee’s first feature film, which was shot over 12 days in black and white. It tells the story of Nola Dar ling, a young woman who has three boyfriends but she won’t commit to any of them. This is the film that made the line, "please, baby, baby, please” a pop culture mainstay. And this was also Lee’s acting debut. He played Mars Blackmon, who goes on to star in several Nike commercials. Another important role this movie played in black movie history, is the move away from blaxploitation films. According to the New York Times, “She’s Gotta Have It” ushered in the American independent film movement of the 1980s. “It was also a ground breaking film for African- American filmmakers and a welcome change in the rep resentation of blacks in American cinema, depicting men and women of color not as pimps and whores, but as intelligent, upscale urbanites," the paper opined in 1986. 9. "Crooklyn” (1994) This movie is about Troy, a little girl growing up in 1970s Brooklyn and her family. The movie was writ ten by Lee and his sister Joie. It’s somewhat autobiograph ical - the mother, played by Alfre Woodard is a school teacher and the father, played by Delroy Undo, is a Jazz musician-just like Lee's parents. This movie was one of Lee’s warmest. The funniest part was when Troy went down South and her auntie took her braids out and pressed her hair. 8. “She Hate Me” (2004) This is one of the few Spike Lee joints Lee doesn’t have an acting role in. This is a creative movie because in the midst of Jack Armstrong providing sperm to lesbians who want to have babies at $10,000 a pop, Lee touches on politics, drama and race. This movie wasn’t widely released and only grossed a half a million in box office receipts. Former Carolina Panther Rod Smart actually inspired the title of the film. Remem ber the XFL? Smart was the player known as "He Hate Me.” "She Hate Me” was the last film Ossie Davis appeared in before his death in 2005. 7. "Inside Man” (2006) This is Lee’s most com mercially successful movie and unlike John Singleton, he didn’t have to sell his soul to make a commercial film. It’s still a Spike Lee joint with political twists and digs. The movie also stars Denzel Washington, so how could it not be one of Lee’s best? This crime drama deals with a bank robbery, but in true Lee fashion, it isn’t your typical cops and robbers movie. There are rumors of a sequel to “Inside Man.” This would be a first. 6. “dockers” (1995) This has to be one of Lee’s bloodiest movies. It opens with someone’s brains splat tered on the sidewalk. This is Mekhi Phifer's first starring role and Lee found a dia mond in him. The movie is about a low- level drug dealer who talks his brother into committing a murder that he was ordered to do. Critics loved the movie and because of “Clockers” shows like "The Comer” and "The Wire" were given a green light. 5. “Jungle Fever" (1991) This movie put Halle Berry on the map. However, Sam Jackson really made this movie. Gator, the character Jackson played, was a funny crackhead. The plot, howev er, centers around the affair of a married black man. Flip per (Wesley Snipes) and a white woman, Angie (Annabella Sciorra). Flipper had a light skinned wife who tells him that he just had to have a white woman because he was so dark. The lore of this movie is that Lee told Berry she was too pretty to play a crack- head, so this chick didn’t wash and hung out in crack- houses to research the role. It worked, because Berry was almost unrecognizable in the role. 4. "Mo Better Blues" (1990) This movie had two of the I^iStOrtC “I*” Tu«li>y-Siiniiay Cxtelsitor Clitli 921 Beatties Ford Rd. • 704-334-5709 .7 ^ 'i (Cxrelitor ^ tl, Club “Wednesday Night Live ■ JAZZ” With Our House Band ’’PORTERHOUSE’ Featuring Michael Porter, Andrew Williams, Tommy Green Steve Gordon and Gerard Benson Doors Open at 7pm..
