But their suc- etas is only partly expressed by the sums they control. They hare accomplished at variety - of additional i and most important purposes.. ; They keep immense stores of provisions and of clothing, bought at wholesale prices from the first producer ; they build and buy bouses , for their member, giving to trie purchaser a long credit ; they undertake the manufacture of certain 'articlas designed by the society in public workshops, where members who are thrown ouk of employment "can always nd . work and pay for! their labor ; they have been bio-to purchase land in order to provide for men unfit tor factory work and to procure votes which in England depend partially on landed property4-for the fcupnort of their ititerets, and ftbey have, even succeeded in obtaining a surplus for the establishment of free 'schools ap public balls, in which libra . riea are kerjt, lectures are delivered and social intercourse may be ha, free of charge, by all the members-. ' To crown the doble work, they -hjave adopt ed the. principle of brotherly "assistance to alj similar institutions, and have not only never & yjjt refused it to those who were in need, but have actually bestowed their liberality snon- t ooualv upon outsiders, as whoa thev r ANOTHER GREAT POPULAR It is commonly known that the General Government, Tor wise purposes, ,ha giyen its aid and encouragement to the construc tion of one Mais Through Lese of Rail road from the Pacific Ocean across the Territories, to connect with ; the various Eastern Branches of the Pacific Railroad ADVERTISEMENTS. i CASH WITH THE' 1868.
