It was practically fall of people to see the Rentfrow Comedy Company on its first night. The orchestra seats were all taken and chairs tad to be placed in some of the aisles. The bill was "From Sire to Son" and it contained enough of comedy, pathos and tragedy to please the large audience. The company ia a very good oce indeed, among them being some artists, notably Mr. Phelps, the leading man, Mr. Peters, a well balanced comedian, Mis9 May and others in fact there are no "sticks" in the company and the work is far and away ahead of the usual popular priced attraction. If one does not like the play he can get more than his money's worth in music furnished by a most excellent orchestra, while the specialties are of a most interesting kind, musical and otherwise. The Postal Telegraph & Cable Company an nounces that the general southern headquarters of that company will be removed from Richmond to At lanta, March 1, C. C. Adanis, of Philadelphia, has been appointed superintendent of the Southern division and J. VV. Kates', who has been general superin tendent at Richmond, will remain in that city as district superintendent. Captured Boers Escape. Pretoria, Jan. 26. Col. Wil son captured 20 Boers near Frank fort in Orange River Colony. He was preparing at dawn the next day to move away with his captives when a superior force of Boers made a desperate effort to recapture the prisoners. A hot fight ensued in which all but three of the prisoners escaped, and in which a few men were killed or wounded on both sides. A bill introduced in the New York Legislature provides that a passenger in a street car that is de layed more than ten minutes by a block, shall receive back the price of the car fare on demand. The Elkin Times reports many farmers leaving Surry county for Colorado. In the police court this morning, James Dunnegan was up on the charge of assault and battery, and aa bound over to court under a bond of 50. Reid, superinten dent of Meiliodist Missions in Corea, who spoke twice in Durham Sunday, left this morning for the eastern part of the State. Miss Lizzie Morehead, Miss Kath leen Ballard and John F. Wily went down to Raleigh this afternoon to see Denman Thompson and compa ny in " 1 he Old Homestead to night. E. A. Bradsher came in this morn ing from Rjxboro, where be spent Sunday with his family, and left for Cary and other points in the interest of the Richmond house for which he travels. Salisblhy, Jan. 26. O. L. Fol ger, a white fireman of the South ern, shot aod klleJ R. II. Moore, also white, at Spencer tonight at 7:30 0 clock. The two men who had previously been on friendly terras, quarreled, Moore cursing Fol ger and advanced on him with a batcher knne. Folger drew a pistol and 6hot Moore three times, the shots causing almost instant death. A negro who interfered with the evident intention of aiding Moore, was shot in the leg. iolger was arrested at the South ern passenger depot here tonight and committed to jail. Several years ago he shot and seriously woanded Dick Sparnell, at that time yard conductor on the Southern. Special to Charlotte Observer. College Bred Negroes. An inauirv into the pursuits of college bred negroes received 1,312 replies. Of this number , one-half are teachers, one-sixth preacners, one-sixth students and professional men, C per cent farmers, artisans and merchants and 4 per cent in the government service. The teachers, if competent, are all needed, but the number of mechanics, farmers and trades is signihcantly small. lne failure to engage in trade may not be altogether voluntary, but the dis position to crowd the professions is as evident as among wmtes ana with less chance of success. The White Pass and Yukon Rail way company has just finished a cantilever bridge over the White Pass canyon 850 feet in length, with a clear span of 240 feet, and 275 feet high above the bottom of the canyon in the middle. The everlast ing ice had to be quarried away for the supports of the bridge. When tested with the weight of a massive rotary snowplow and two engines coupled together, there was a total downward deflection in the middle pf the bridge of but five-eighths of an inch.
