A Rifls Ball Glances From John,""" uii-llil IU UUIU Powder on the i Geer's Cheek Bone. I ; Ball Glances From Geer's Cheek Bone. John Geer, colored, an employee of the Durham Traction Company, while at work on Chapel Hill street thia morning, was struck on the cheek bone by a ball supposed to have-come - from a-Fiobert rifle. The bail rebounded, but noUuh standing thia fact, caused a right painful wound. I aere was no repoitat the time the shot was fired and the first .L wounded man knew of it was when he was struck. It is supposed to have been a stray Boot, but there is not the slightest ciaeas to who fired 11 Persons cannot be too particular in regard to handling guns, rifles, or other firearms, as accidents some times happen when least expected MR. UACKNtY WARNED. Advised to Make All Necessary Piep rations In Time. Xi. kj, iiacnuev, manager or tnt. r IT- .1 r . Durham Opera House has received the following rather etartling letter from Charlotte: "I notice by the Charlotte papers that preparations are- being made to ship the Elks Circus and menagerie , - la. irora unarioue to uurnam. "1 had hoped for your sake that no effort would be make to exhibit the menagerie in vour town, for the cirens alone would be sufficient at traction to fill your bouse for two nights. However, as it is to be. I deem it my duty to you as a friend to warn you in advauce so vou mav lake time by the toreiock and pre pare for the ordeal through whioh you are destined to pass. There are a number of animals in the menagerie, the like of which has never been seen in any other1 show. bey are so rare that when the au thorities permit them to appear in tne street parade, horses and evenJ women and children become fright ened at the unaccustomed Bight, and veritable panics are the results. I would susrsiest that vou call the at tention of the chief of police to this tact, that be may either have part of the street parade suppressed or have extra oflicers along the line of march to guard against danger. Mliut what 1 most particularly desire to say to you ia that the pa pier maohe mastodon, 'which is, so far as I know, the only one in ex istence, it being the last of its mighty race, is so large and so heavy that no ordinary stasre is strong enough to sustain its heavy weight. If your contract with the circus company is the same as mine was, you cannot prevent it from eo- m a. ing on the stage, and if it does, it will almost certainly break through it. My advice would be to have some strong truss work built under .1 In a. the stage, it labor and timber are as cheap in Durham as in Charlotte this can be done for about two hun dred dollars. A "Hoping you will not suffer any serious damage through the Elk menagerie, I remain, Yours truly, Nat Gray, Manager Charlotte Opera House. Mr".
