PetMHaU a/ Mr. and Mrs. Larrie Cooper, of Ennice, have returned from a two week’s visit with relatives and friends in Maryland, Pen nsylvania and Delaware. , Mrs. Dewey Sturdivant and daughter, Mary Jane, Mrs. Sam Porter, and son, Lewis, were in Winston-Salem last week. Major Tom King returned Mon day from Germany and 1s' visit ing his family at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fowler. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Jarvis and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Jarvis spent last week in Washington, D. C. Tommy Osborne, student at North Carolina State College, at Raleigh, was the guest of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Osborne during the week-end. Tommy Burgiss spent last week end at Chapel Hill as the guest of his sister, Miss Pat Burgiss, who is a student at the University of North Carolina. Mrs. B. O. Edwards, and daugh ter, Eleanor, of Asheville, were week-end guests of Mrs. Edwards’ father, Congressman R. L. Dough ton. Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Reed, and son, and Mr. and Mrs. Willie Lee Poole, and daughter, spent Sunday in West Jefferson with relatives. Everett Moxley of Winston Salem, spent Monday in Sparta. 'Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Presnell, and son, Jerry, of Colonial Beach, Va., and Mrs. Howard Rector, of Hudson, N. C., were week-end guests of Mrs. Amy Wagoner. Mr. and Mrs. James Doughton, and daughter, Jody, spent last week-end with Mrs. Bess Spicer. Miss Maybelline Richardson, sophomore at Radford College. Radford Va., spent the past week end with her mother, Mrs. Maude Richardson. Mr. and Mrs. Claude Crouse, of Winston-Salem, were visiting relatives here during the week end. Mrs. J. M. Cheek. Sr., left last Thursday for a visit with her daughter, Mrs. G. A. McKinley at Waynesville. She was accompani ed by her son, J. M. Cheek Jr., of Galax, Va. Mrs. Johnson, of Charlotte, is spending several days here as the guest of her daughter, Mrs. Duke Bledsoe. Mrs. Benedict has returned to her home in Texas after a visit Of several weeks here with her son and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Quinn. Mr. and Mrs. A. O. TJomes spent last Thursday in Winston-Salem. Mr. and Mrs. James Hoppers, and son, Billy, of Morganton. spent the past week end here with Mrs. Hoppers’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Goodman. On Sunday they, all visited Mrs. Florence Goodman at West Jefferson. Voscoe Edwards, of Filer, Idaho, is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Edwards at Whitehead. Mrs. F. W. Cheek and Mrs. Arthur Matthews were guests of the former’s sister, Mrs. W. F. Thompson on Sunday. Mrs. T. S. Moxley and Reese Miller spent Saturday at Lenoir with Dr. and Mrs. Wayne Miller. Mrs. Arthur Matthews and Mrs. Oscar Joines spent Saturday in North Wilkesboro. Miss Alice Doughton, of Wash ington, D. C., arrived Friday for a visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kemp Doughton. Mrs. J. C. Padgett and Mrs. Bird Reeves, of Independence, Va., spent last Wednesday with Miss Jean Hawthrone. Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Hincher had as their dinner guests last Sun day, Mrs. Haywood Brown, and children, from Trap Hill, N. C„ Mr. and Mrs. John Long, Mr. R. L. Hendrix, and daughter, Mrs. Lon Richardson, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Crouse, and children. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Coomes have moved into their new home on the Rivers Gap Highway, near Galax. DOUGHTON L. PERRY, who before her recent marriage was Miss Jessie Gwyn Woodruff, daughter of Mrs. Guy Wood ruff, of Sparta. W oodruf f-Perry Wedding Told An announcement of interest this week is that of the marriage of Miss Jessie Gwyn Woodruff to Doughton L. Perry, both of Sparta. The ceremony was per formed at the home of the offi ciating minister, the Rev. C. B. Kilby, pastor of the Sparta Prim itive Baptist church, on Saturday, October 12. Mr. and Mrs. K. C. Duncan and Miss Lucile Perry and Clayton Edwards were the only witnesses. The bride was attired in a dress of white wool jersey with which she wore black accessor ies. Her flowers were a shoulder corsage of red rosebuds. Mrs. Perry is the daughter of Mrs. Guy Woodruff. She receiv ed her high school education at the Sparta high school and after her graduation there attended Draughons Business college in Winston-Salem. For the past three years she has been connect ed with the Northwestern Bank, of Sparta. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Perry. Like his bride, he attended Sparta high school and was recently released from the United States army with which he had served for al county. Miss Jean Carson, of Charlotte, spent last week-end here with friends and relatives. Mrs. Willis B. Wilson, of Churchville, Va., was the guest of relatives and friends here during the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Hawthorne spent last week-end in Statesville with their son and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Hawthorne. Mr. and Mrs. Dale Brown, and daughter, of Independence. Va., spent Sunday in North Wilkes boro. Miss Fred Gwyn Woodruff, of Charlotte, was the week-end guest of relatives here. Allen Richardson was the guest of his sister, Miss Euna Lee Richardson, at the Applachian State Teachers College, in Boone last week-end. Miss Emogene Choate, student at the Woman’s College at Greens boro, N. C., spent last week-end here with her mother, Mrs. B. O. Choate. She had as her guest, Miss Onedia Covington, a former roommate at the college. Dr. and Mrs. Roy Burgiss had as their guests on Friday night, Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Hamby Jr., and daughter, Pam, of Boone. Mr. and Mrs. Russell W. White ner, and daughter, Joan, of New ton, were dinner guests of M^s. B. O. Choate, on Sunday. \ Miss Jean Colliiis, who is la freshman at the Flora MacDonald College at Red Springs, N. C., spent last week-end with her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Collins, at Glade Valley. C a r i c o-Choate Wedding Event Of October 19 Miss Edith Irene Carico, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Everett M. Carico, of Galax, became the bride of Harold Leslie Choate, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Choate, of Bay wood, in a‘double ring ceremony which took place Saturday, Oc tober 19, at 7 o’clock in the First Methodist church at Galax. The Rev. W. Kyle Cregger officiated. The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, wore a street dress of bridal blue jersey with black accessories. She car ried a white prayer book, topped with gardenias. Miss Mabel Davis, of Winston Salem, cousin of the bride, was maid of honor and the bride’s only attendant. She wore a two piece pink dress with black ac cessories and carried a colonial bouquet. Charles Choate served as best man for his brother and ushers were Richard Carico and Paul Stewart. The altar was decorated with tall baskets of white chrysanthe mums with candelabra in grad uated effect. Preceding the ceremony, a pro gram of nuptial music was ren dered by Miss Frances Truitt, also 1 a cousin of the bride, with Miss Judy Taylor as soloist. Miss Tay lor sang “Tell Me Why” and “I Love You Turly.” Relatives and close friends were present for the ceremony which was followed immediately by a reception at the home of the bride’s parents. The couple left for a short wed ding trip after which they will be at home in Roanoke, Va., where the bridegroom is attending Na tional Business college. Miss Petty Weds Mr. B. Crouse In a quiet but impressive cer mony, Miss Grace Petty, attrac tive daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Petty, of Laurel Springs, became the bride of Bradie Crouse, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Crouse, of Sparta, at the home of the bride’s parents on Saturday afternoon, October 19. The cere mony was performed at six o’colck with the Elder Mack Dowell of ficiating, using the double ring ceremony. Attending the wedding were Mr. and Mrs. Larry Brooks, Mrs. Glenn Brinegar, and Elder John Tolliver. Mr. and Mrs. Crouse plan to make their home near Sparta where the bridegroom has been a successful farmer for the past few years. BIRTH Mr. and Mrs. Parma Wilmoth announce the birth of a daugh ter on October 12 at the Martin Memorial hospital at Mt. Airy Young Miss Wilmoth has been, given the name of Janet Ann. j Mrs. Wilmoth is the former MiSs Alfogene Carpenter.
