A few years ago some North Carolina farmers said that they could not get along without 3-8-3 fertilizer. Of last year’s 1% mil lion tons, over 90 per cent con tained 18 units of plant food or more. Copra exports from the Phil ippines have exceeded expecta tions and this means more soap. The present U. S. turkey crop will furnish a record 4% pounds of turkey for every person in the nation. It doesn’t do too much good to kill the rats on your own farm. It’s community action that counts. Suggest a county-wide rat erad ication campaign. Mrs. F. W. SELLERS OF THE EARTH (Paid Political Advertisement) Paul Swanson For State Senate As your Republican candidate for the State Senate, from the 29th. district I am in favor of the following program for our district: 1. Improvement of Secondary roads. 2. Better pay for school teachers. 3. Better business con ditions, encouragement for the establishment of more factories, in our district. 4. More comfort able school houses, and school equipment. 5. Encouragement of tourist trade by Statewide adver tising. 6. A State bonus for World War II veterans. 7. A free business, or professional license, for any disabled veteran. 8. A Statewide, automobile liability, and property damage, insurance, required of all auto drivers. 9. A general improvement in law en forcement, and especially as re gards State Highway traffic. Furthermore I would like to say that this year it is Alleghany’s time to have the State Senator, and since the Democratic Party’s leadership has forfeited this county’s right to another county; and failed to nominate a citizen of Alleghany, for the place, hence losing our time in the regular ro tation plan, then I appeal to all voters regardless of your party label, to vote for me for State Senator. I will welcome your vote and highly appreciate it. I consider myself as independent as any man can be and still re tain a party label, as I am not dictated to by any political boasi click, or pressure group, and I am Alleghany’s man, and have the best interests of Alleghany at heart, and I made this county my home by choice and not by an ac cident of birth. I love the majestic hills of Alleghany, and the good people who inhabit them. So l say to all voters if I am elected I will serve all of you regardless of whether you are a Republican or Democrat, to the best of my ability, and as my conscience leads me. Remember the name Paul Swanson, the office State Senate, the time, November the 5th. 1946, and if you are not reg istered to vote get registered in Oct., especially does this apply to veterans of World War II, as I am a veteran of World War II myself I would like to see every veteran a voter. Finally I ap peal to you to vote for “THE ALLEGHANY MAN." Cattle and sheep grazed on pas ture treated with the 2, 4-D weed killer have shown no symptoms i of discomfort or illness. “Spartan” “King David” “Trap well” SMOKING PIPES OF DISTINCTION “Woodsman” Sparta Pipes, Inc. And this is one article in such good supply that homemakers shopping for blan kets may find a number in the stores from which to choose. To help those buying blankets to get the most for their money, textile specialists offer these sug gestions. Read labels carefully. If the blanket is marked “wool,” the label must give the exact per centage of wool fiber. As a rule, the more wool the warmer the blanket. It takes at least 25 per cent wool to make much differ ence in warmth, or to give‘any of the characteristics of a wool blanket, such as fluffiness, elas ticity, and ability to absorb mois ture without feeling damp. Sometimes the label gives ad ditional information, such as the breaking strength of the length wise and crosswise yarns. For most purposes, high strength of the crosswise yarns is the more important of the two. Since these yarns are soft and loosely twist ed they are apt to be weakened by napping. The label may also tell the weight of *he blanket. In choos ing between blankets of the same size and fiber content, the heav ier one contains more fiber and therefore is usually the better buy at the same price. Before buving a blanket hold it up to the light and inspect the nap. Thick napping adds to '"a’-mth. because the fluff forms little air pockets that act as in sulators. But be sure that the nap is even all over. Do not choose a blanket that shows thick and thin in spots. Some blankets are over-napped. If a gentle pull on the nap loosens it, it is a safe bet that the nap will soon wear i off.
