—— Your Tri-County Health Dept. By Robert R. Kin*, Jr. District Health Officer On Friday May 23, several members of the District Health Department attended a meeting of the Western North Carolina Public Health Association at Lake Lure, N. C. This association con sists of public health workers in 29 counties in the mountain sec tion of North Carolina and is a part of the North Carolina Public Health Assoc, which ser ves the entire state but meets on ly once a year and is rather un wieldy because of its large size. The purpose of the smaller dis trict association is to improve public health service in our sec tion of the state as the approach to our problems differs from that in other geographic areas of the state. It is also true that the Western district will be bet ter represented in state-wide af THE FACT IS By GENERAL ELECTRIC CAN G0120 MILES PER HOUR / NEW DIESEL ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE BUILT BY GENERAL ELECTRIC AND ALCO IS DESIGNED 70 OPERATE OMG MILLION Ai/LES WITHOUT MAJOR OVERHAUL. County Boys In Shearing Finals A sheep shearing school conducted by Ed Warner of the Sunbeam Cooperation of Chi cago, was held in the county last week when about 25, 4-JI Club Boys from five counties attended the school. On Thursday a shear ing contest for 4-H Club Boys was held at the Upper Mountain Experiment Station at Transou. Twelve boys entered the prelimi nary contest. The four high scor fairs if it acts as an organizing unit. For a long time there has been a subconscious feeling in the state that the mountain counties were an undeveloped wilderness which could' add little to the state revenue and deser ved little state aid. This feeling can best be overcome by groups such as the Western North Caro lina Public Health Association. Attending the meeting from this district were: Mrs. Cleo Reeves of Sparta, Mrs. J. C. Jackson of Jefferson, Wade E. Eller of Warrensville, Jack D. Cobb of Boone and Dr. Robert R. King, Jr., of Boone. Workers from the 29 other counties in this district were also present. During the morning the group ■vas addressed by Dr Earnest M. Branch, Division of Oral Hy giene, State Board of Health, Raleigh, whose address pointed out the ways in which public health could most benefit school children. During the afternoon the mem bers of the assosciation met in groups representing the different fields of public health activities. These groups were Health Offi cers, Sanitarians, Nurses. Health Educators, Clerks and Epidem iologist. Each of these groups discussed problems common to its field of activity, and as usual there was a general give and take of ideas. The next meeting of this type will be held in Way nesville in October. Sergeant Francis M. Darcy, commander of the Lenoir army recruiting station today released the information that contrary,to popular belief, the educational benefits of the G. I. Bill of Rights did not terminate as of October 6, 1946. “Many people are of the opinion,” said Sergeant Darcy, “that the benefits pro vided under the G. I. Bill of Rights terminated as of 6 Octo ber, 1946. This is not true.” “According to the Amended Serviceman’s Readjustment Act,” he said, “any man who enlists or reenlists in the regular army after October 6, 1946, and served 90 days of that enlistment L' entitled to one year of schooling, plus one month of schooling for each month of service, completed prior to the date of the termina tion of the war.” “In view of these extended pri vileges and the opportunities available in our peacetime army today.” continued Sgt Darcy, “it is expected that enlistments will continue at a high rate in the western section of North Carolina.” Those interested may see an army recruiter at the local post office each Monday 8:00 a. m. to 12:00 noon, -'oij at the post of -fice, Lenoir, every day. ing boys then shearedin the fin al contest. Orville Hendrix, of Laurel Springs; and Cary Caudill, of Whitehead were among the four boys for the finals. In the finals Cary Caudill placed first, Sam Swindell of Pamlico county placed second, and Orville Hen drix third. The two winning first and second places are entitled to a free trip to the International Live Stock Show which will be held in Chicago in December where they will compete in an other shearing contest with boys from other states. In the contest the boys were judged by the following points: time, absence of second cuts in the wool, absence of cuts on the sheep, technique in handling sheep, appearance of shorn sheep and condition of fleece. Mr. Swindell who placed sec ond was on the team that shear ed in Chicago last year and plac ed sixth in the contest. According to the National Fire Protection Association farm fires destroy approximately $90,000, 600 worth of property each year.
