West Jefferson Bean Marls To Open On Tuesday July 1 Demand Expected To Be Good Weather Delays Crop West Jefferson — (Special) — The 1947 bean season will of ficially get underway in this sec tion on Tuesday, July 1, as both •f the local auction markets open. Indications point to a successful season as the crop, which was delayed by cool weather, appears to show promise of full produc tion, after recent rains. Last year, according to reports from the county agent’s office more than 400*000 bushels of beans were sold, pn the local mar kets for an average of over $2.00 per bushel, bringing an income of around $800,000. Sales will start early in the afternoon and farmers are urged to bring their beans in early when possible instead of waiting until night. They are also requested to pick beans while they are young and tender instead of waiting un til they are too mature. Sales on quality beans are ex pected to be good, but low grade beans are not in demand at the present, according to market sur veys. ROY R. TEDDER SUCCUMBS SUDDENLY Mrs. Arza L. Caudell, of Galax, Virginia, received a telegram re cently, stating that her nephew, Roy R. Tedder had passed a way suddenly at his home near Washington, D. C., due to a heart attack. He is survived by his wife, one aunt, Mi?. Kate Tedder Cau dell, the only living relative of his father’s immediate family- Al so three uncles and five aunts of his mother’s family, survive. He had served five years in the armed forces and received his discharge about a year ago. Summer Arrives Cool Arid Damp Summer officially arrived here on Saturday with some of the coolest weather that had been felt here in some weeks. The rains accentuated the eOolness Of the atmosphere and coats and fires were brought into use. Friday night the thermometer dropped slightly below 40 de grees according to some Unof ficial reports. A Arrest Woman; Man For Theft Two members of the Gate City carnival troop were . arrested Sunday on charges of larceny, Chief C. B. Taylor said yester day. John Duncan, of Atlanta, Ga, was reported to have stolen a handbag containing $14.25 be longing to Virginia Truitt, of Sparta at the Rockhouse, on Sun-, Pleading guilty to the charge, Duncan was turned over to Su perior court, following a hearing held Tuesday. Duncan was fined $50 and costs, and ordered to pay $16.75 to Virginia Truitt. Jackie Boutill, of Eastman, Ga., also charged with larceny, was released following the hearing and trial when the case against her was nol prossed. Arrests were made by Wayne Hoppers. Bradley served under Eisen hower as commander of Ameri can ground forces in the Euro pean campaign that brought the downfall of Hitler and Nazi Ger many.
