In the fall of 1S7S the Northern Pa
ciflc railway line hatf tfeea oompleted
u far waat u Bismarck. N. D. Mr. |
Carnshan waa aeked to go to F
and manage that office, and In the
?prttg of lt7t be went there and the
big chapter In the story of hie event
ful life began. For It was while he
waa at Bismarck thai he sent to the
world the aooount of the Cuetar i
sacre on the Little Big Horn In July, I
1878.
Fort Abraham Lincoln, the poet otj
the Sereoth cavalry and the haadQuaiU
tera of Brigadier General Custer,
at Bismarck. Mr. Cerulean won
Brigadier General Cutter's friendship
and he became the personal friend of
the officers at Lincoln. And so It was
that he and the poet surgeoa rode out
from the old garrison with the Custer
expedition whun It started in June.
1178, to punish the 8toux. The surgeon
and the operator made the first twelve
miles with the Seventh earalry. Then
Ihey turned back with the last dis
patches which Brigadier General Cus
ter sent.
No word came back to Bismarck |
from the 8eveath earalry and Us com
mander. But that occasioned no sur- 1
prise. Expeditions of that sort were |
a common ooenrrence In thoee days.
It waa on the night of July 5 when
the steamboat Far West came down
the rtver to Bismarck. The Far West
brqgght the wounded of Reno's com
mand and the official dispatches which I
told of the oomplete annihilation of |
the Custer command.
On the morning of Jajy 6 Mr. Carna
han found on his desk btye telegraph
office a carpet bag filled with official
dispatches. There was an Immense
lot of them. He "flashed" the news to
the Bast, and then settled down to the
transmiealon of the official story to
the department of war in Washington.
It waa eight o'clock on the morning of
July 6 when few- began his tremendous
task. Not until five o'clock the fol
lowing morning ? 21 hours ? did he
leave his Instruments. Then for three
hours ha alapt the sleep of utter ex
haustion. He Jtturned to his work,
and for SO hours he sat at his key.' It
waa four o'clock the next morning
when he checked off the signature of
the last dispatch in that old carpet
'bag. He had sent 80,000 words in the
two shifts.
For two days the eastern newspa
pers had been clamoring for news, and
there was no one to send it Mr. Car
nahan could not leave hie official work
and there waa no other telegraph op
erator within two hundred miles.
To the New York Herald, the Chica
go Inter Ocean and the St; Paul Pio
neer Press he sent as much of the
news aa he had strength to prepare.
And that was the way the news of the
Custer battle waa sent out.
That was the big news article In
the career of John Carnaban. But In
the professional secrets of 5.1 years at
a tejegraph key there must be many
Incidents stored up which would star
tie the world If thev were tc<1.
