America still throws away the world's richest garbage Cuts Asked The Famine Emergency Com mittee is asking that until mid July "our citizens make a volun tary sacrifice of 40 percent of their consumption of wheat pro ducts and 20 percent of food fats and oils." Public eating places are asked to cut service of fats 20 percent and to use no more than an aver age of two pounds of flour per customer a week.yBakers are ask ed to reduce the weight of bak ery products by a least 10 per cent. Food manufacturers and distributors are urj*?d to pro mote use 01 pientitul foods such as fish eggs, and poVtoes in place of grain products, fats, and oils. In addition to conserving food we must augment existing. sup plies by planting victory gardens declares the Emergency Famine Committee. Food grown and con sumed at home reduces demand on existing stocks. Assisting- millions of home makers throughout the nation with food saving are such agenci es as the Department of Agri culture, the American Red Cross and school and state health age ncies. Ways To Conserve For effective conservation the Red Cross Nutrition Service makes these urgent appeals to householders: j 1. Conserve bread at each meal. If every family in this country would nave just a half slice of bread each day there would be a national saving of 500,000 pounds. 2. Use a potato salad instead of an extra sandwich. 8. Use oat cereals more often, j A serving of oatmeal equals two slices of bread in food value. | 4. Boil, bake, broil, Instead of frying. 5. Cook vegetables in skins whenever possible. 6. Use fruits and other types of dessert instead of pastries. 7. Salvage all fats that cannot be re-ured and turn them in to your grocer or butcher. 8. Buy only what you need, and need what you buy. 9. Protect food against spoil age; use left-overs promptly; do not hoard flour. 10. Use fats and oils sparingly. A daily saving of a teaspoon of fat by each consumer in the U. S. means a total saving of at least 1,000,000 pounds a day. Never before in the history of world food shortages have so many people's lives depended up on the voluntary actions of a nation. "If we fail them," says the Emergency Famine Committee, "we Shall see the death of milli ons of fellow human beings. Guns speak tne rirst words of victory, but food can speak the last word." Food Parcels for D. P.'s Until supplies are exhausted the American Red Cross will dis tribute two food parcels a month to each of 145,000 displaced per sons in western Germany to sup plement their daily diet. | WEEK END AT HOME Mrs. J.
