HURRICANE (Continued From Page 1) come, and this advice was heeded sufficiently well to prevent the disaster that comes from unpre paredness. And when the backlash of the storm did start up about 10 o'clock the winds had shifted from the northeast to the west, and were of just as great intensity as had been experienced earlier in the evening. In checking up on damages caused by the storm, here in Southport the steeple of St. Phil lips Episcopal Church toppled to the ground, for the town’s most spectacular loss. A section of the city dock was washed away and the huge storage shed of South port Fisheries was down. Over at Long Beach the pavilion was hardest hit. with the front section going out and the building being gutted. Only one house was moved from its foundation, and it was resting virtually intact in the middle of the highway. Henry Williams reported that his home near Shallotte “split in two’’ but nobody was there at the time. A barn on the Joe Stanaland place near Hickman’s Crossroads collapsed and a pack bam on the Starling Hewett farm was destroyed. There were others, but this is a sample of the force of the wind that raked the county. Possible the greatest total loss was to the fine corn crop that had been produced this year in Brunswick. Now it has been blown down, beat up and some of it has been buried. , As has been the case in other years, the Red Cross was on duty before, during and after the storm. The Schools of Brunswick county were used, as shelters, and literally hundreds of persons sought refuge from the storm. Here in Southport the Volun teer Firemen and the city force kept vigil and the highway patrol and CAP were standing by to help with what every emergency might arise and with communica tions. Does a tax this high—on a basic commodity like gasoline —really make sense? Gasoline taxes in this state amount to a 50% sales tax—and that’s over five times as high as the tax rate on luxuries like dia monds and mink coats. How did gasoline taxes get so high? Well, since World War II, there have been three increases in the federal gaso line tax alone. This brought the Federal tax to 4 cents a gallon, in addition to the State tax of 7 cents a gallon. Looking at it another way, in the last ten years gaso line taxes have skyrocketed 51%—yet the price of gaso line itself has risen only 5.5% during the same period. $96 a year for gasoline taxes! Gallon by gallon, these taxes add up to a lot of money. Each year the average motor vehicle owner in this state pays $96 for gasoline taxes alone. That s actually more than the aver age week’s pay for most people! Your gasoline retailer—who must collect these taxes from you—feels that gasoline taxes are much too high. More and more, thinking people are coming to agree. What do you think? HIGHWAYS AND GASOLINE TAXES Your gasoline retailer, naturally, favors construction of the roads that the motoring public needs. He believes in fair and reasonable taxation for this purpose but feels that taxes on gasoline have now reached unreason ably high levels. He also believes that all special taxes on the motorist should be used only for highway pur poses. Yet last year, out of every automobile tax dollar collected by the Federal Government from highway users, more than 40 cents went for non-highway pur poses. If these automotive tax revenues were dedicated for highway purposes, there would be no need for the latest increase in the federal gasoline tax.
