Dredging Opens
I Up Davis Creek
i One Result Has Been That
Fishing Area Has Been
Improved And Enlarged
Six feet of water now courses
| through Big Davis Creek Canal,
giving residents of the Tranquil
! Harbour section of Long Beach
| ready access to the Intracoastal
! Waterway and the sea.
The canal has been linked with
the waterway and this week a
spokesman for the huge develop
ment said that “boating enthusi
asts familiar with the dredging,
as now accomplished, can use the
link between Big Davis, the wa
terway, and of course, the ocean.”
Some work remains, said the
spokesman, before the project is
completed. Eventually the canal
will be cleared all the way to
Lockwood Folly Inlet. Ashed for a
date on this, the spokesman
guessed that it would be "some
time this winter. In time”, he
added, “for the opening of the
summer season in 1962.
There are a small number of
shoals in the canal, left by drag
line operations when a soft spot
was encountered. These will have
to be dredged anewi—n order to
establish a uniform six-feet of
drew water. The canala, some
places well over one-hundred feet
across, will have a minimum of
100-feet at bottom.
Lincoln Construction Co. of
Wilmington and Leland, are the
contractors for the project.
One immediate result of the
dredging has been an increase in
j fishing activities. E. W. Morgan
and Guy Smith, both permanent
residents of Tranquil Harbour, in
two short excursions during the
j past few days caught 58 flounder
; in Big Davis Creek.
The fishing pier at Long Beach
also reports large catches of
| speckled trout during the past
j fe wdays.

In the midst of the summer sea
son Tranquil Harbour, most am
bitious development along the
Lower Brunswick coast, is a bee
hive of building activities.
All streets lying within section
15 of the burgeoning seaside prop
erty have recently been hardsur
faced, and the construction of
some 15 residences has been com
pleted within the past wek or so.
The Brunswick Electric Coop
erative has found it necessary to
base a power unit permanently at
the Harbour, in order to handle
the swarm of applications for
electric current <uade by home
owners. A building has been erect- j
ed along the Inland Waterway,
to house the unit.
Southern Bell Telephone Co. has
recently purchased a site on Tran
quil Harbour, upon which it plans
to construct an exchange.
A model home company located
at Charlotte has erected the first
of eight homes within the develop
ment. Among these homes, built
under individual order, is one of
California redwood.
Dr. Robert M. Olson, of Kenly,
has let contract for ope of the
more pretentious homes to be
built on that portion of the Har
bourn which fronts on the banks
of the Inland Waterway.
Tranquil Harbour now lies with
in the corporate limits of Long
Beach—probably the best known
strand along the extreme south
eastern portion of the state.

Knowles said that although
there has been some tobacco loss I
in the county due to the pro- ,
traded and heavy rain3 of the |
past few weeks, his observation '
shows “that local farmers have
been able to barn their tobacco
which had yellowed-up from ex- j
cess water.”
The agricultural agent urged all !
farmers to top their tobacco and
to keep it suckered in order to
increase the quality and value of
their crop.
