f Southport Club fHolds Meeting f The Southport Extension Homemakers dub held its April meeting at the home of Mrs. Anna Davis with Mrs. Laura St. George as co hostess. The meeting was called to order by the president, Mrs. Marie Johnson. The devotional was given by the agent, Mrs. Mary L. Russ, and was on “Selection and Construction of Window Women Golfers In Tournament The Women’s Golf Association of Oak Island dub participated in an in vitational tournament for Pine Valley and Cape Fear Country dubs April 28-29. About sixty women from the three clubs played. Winners from Pine Valley were Winkie Lee, Marie Narron, Juanita McLemore, Trudy Buckwalter, Frances Hines, Juanita Williams, Minnie Wilson, Marilyn Williams, Adamae Krider. Dot Oxenfeld, Pam Waters, Elizabeth Beale, Mary Taylor, Esther Ormsby, Willeen Fraley and Hulda Jacobi were winners from Cape Fear. Oak Island winners were Amaretta Prevatte, Sylvia James, Mebin Martin, Irma Caroon, Rachel Monckton, Louise Parker, Liza Walker, Margaret Porterfield, Glenna Pegram and Sue Jones. curtains and draperies.” She pointed out the different styles for different types windows as well as the style home they were to be used in. She showed samples of prints that would look good pleated, pointing out that some prints do not look good when pleated for draperies. A discussion was held on drapery hardware and the kind that is best to use for different type < windows, “All windows are not easy to decorate” said Mrs. Russ, as their are so many these days.” Mrs. Johnson asked if anyone was interested in attending the workshop to be held in Greenville at East Carolina June 23-25. She is planning to and will be glad for some of the members to go with her. Mrs. Mary Hewett reminded the members of the Heritage House craft display and asked that things be displayed this year. All things shown must be made by the club members. “We are hoping for a real good display by all our clubs in the county, she said. We are giving a room each year in the Heritage House to be used for our exhibits and we would like for all of our Club’s to have a part in this, we are real proud of the work our club members do each year and their is some very pretty things made by some of our members. Let’s bring them out and show the folks how smart we really are.” At the close of the business session the collect was I Thank You I appreciate the confidence you have shown in me in reelecting me as a member of the Board of Aldermen for the City of Southport. HAROLD ALDRIDGE Oak Island Club Meeting The Oak Island Extension Homemaker Club held its April meeting at the Ocean View Methodist Church with Mrs. Mary Alma Connor, president, presiding. Mrs. Frances Harrelson, first vice president, read the devotional and gave an ap propriate thought for the day. Mrs. Mary L. Russ, Home Economics Extension Agent for Brunswick County, went over in detail the letter that had been received by the Homemakers, Several members signed up to attend the drapery workshop to be held at the Extension Building in Supply. Mr. Jackie H. Stephenson, director Resources Development Commission for Brunswick County, was guest speaker. He gave an in formative talk on the present and future development of Brunswick County. After his talk he gave an opportunity to the members for questions and answers. After all business was taken care of, two new members were received. They were Mrs. Irene Bryant and Mrs. Lois Pendergras. Three visitors also were present. They were Mrs. Bill Davis, Mrs. Ray Venable and Mrs. Virginia Christenbury. A letter was read by the president from Dosher repeated in union after which refreshment were served to the following: Miss Lottie Mae Newton, Miss Annie St. George, Mrs. Brady Lewis, Mrs. Blanche Weeks, Mrs. Minnie Dodson, Mrs. Lizzie Brunson, Mrs. Bessie Cullis, Mrs. Melissa Dutcher, Mrs. Mary Hewett, Mrs. Margaret Hood, Mrs. Marie Johnson, Mrs. Laura St. George, Mrs. Anna Davis, Mrs. Mary L. Russ, and visitor, Mrs. Jessie Swan. Memorial Hospital thanking the club for its donation to the hospital toward the purchase of a Film Projector and screen and table, to be used by the nurses and doctors. These have been ordered. Another contribution toward the Youth Center was collected, after a thank you note from the Youth Center building fund committee had read for an earlier donation made by the club. The president urged all new residents as well as old who had not registered to vote in the up coming town’s elec tions, to please do so at both Yaupon and Long Beach. Mrs. Dorothy Bloomfield and Mrs. Irene Bryant served refreshments to the 22 members and guests present. Mrs. Russ, Home Economics Extention Agent, will present the May program. Leland Defeats Eagles, 5 To 2 By JIGGS POWERS ASH — Leland’s Tigers got a good pitching job from Billy Milligan here, Tuesday af ternoon, and went on to defeat the Waccamaw Eagles, 5-2, in a Brunswick County Conference baseball game. In a battle of the Milligans, Righthander Billy of the Tigs hurled a 3-hitter, fanned 2, walked 3, but also hit 3 bat ters to keep things a bit un decided at times. Lefthander Davis Milligan of the Eagles gave up 9 hits, fanned 3, walked 3. Ethel Bell hit 2 for 3 and Elmore Sullivan had a 1-for-l average for the winning Tigers from Leland. Hunt of Fayetteville, has been elected to membership in Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society. He is a senior at Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University and will begin an internship at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington this summer. He is married to the former Victoria A. Powell of Fayetteville. He is the nephew of Miss Carrie Harper of Southport. PTO MEETING The final meeting of the Southport Elementary PTO for this year will be held Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Jaycee Building. Officers for the coming year will be in stalled. Mrs. Joyce Costin, 13th District Director for the PTA, and Mrs. Howard Carter will be present to explain the benefits of being a part of the PTA. All parents and teachers are urged to be present for this meeting as a vote will be taken to decide between PTO or PTA. HISTORICAL SOCIETY The Historical Society will meet in the fellowship Hall of Camp Methodist Church, Shallotte, Monday at 8 p.m. Guest speaker will be James M. Clifton, Head of the Department of History and Social Science, Southeastern Community College, Whiteville. The subject will be “Rice Plantations of Colonial Times.” Cougars Bump Pirates, 10-4 Data: JANICENYE ELIZABETHTOWN — A big, 6-run fourth inning wrapped up a 1(M Wac camaw AA baseball win for Coaches James B. Hall and Ernest Bacote and their Elizabethtown Cougars here, Tuesday night, over the Shallotte Pirates. Kim Cain was the winning pitcher for the Cougars, with Eddie Stephens coming in during the 6th to finish the local mound chores. Mike Winfree was the loser for Shallotte, turning over things to Freshman Wayne Long in the big 4th. Nobody had more than one hit for either team. In that 6-run fourth-frame for Elizabethtown, Ron Gooden struck out with one away, but lived when Catcher Edgar Wooten of the visitors let the third strike get away from him; Doug fevans singled, Eddie Stephens walked, Randy Harris singled, Kim Cain also singled, and Larry Taylor walked and then Andy Sabol had a two-run single for the capper.
