Hospital Has New Equipment The Department o! Radiology of J. Arthur Dosher Memorial Hospital is pleased to an nounce the installation of a Picker Telecon Unit. This represents Television Fluoroscopy and is the most recent advance in X-ray. Conventional fluoroscopy was developed in 1896 by Dr. Wilhelm Conrad Reoentgen. The significance of fluoroscopy lies in the fact that it permits a Radiologist (specialist in X-Ray) to observe the physiology (movement) or organs as well as internal structure. Prior to Image In tensification fluoroscopy was never able to produce an image as bright as an X-Ray film; however, with Telecon a television image can be' produced which is con siderably improved over conventional fluoroscopy and can be projected on closed! circuit TV sets outside of the examination room. Other advantages include, diminished radiation to the patient and examiner, the study may be performed in a room with subdued light rather than in total darkness facilitating observation of the patient at all times, and with Telecon more than one person may view the study being performed at any one time directly without have to accommodate ones eyes to darkness. Technically, if desired closed circuits TV monitors may be installed in referring physicians’ offices so that they might observe their patients being examined by the Radiologist. Telecon is a real medical and radiological step forward for Brunswick County’s r Hospital. This unit is modular looking ahead to the day when with expanded facilities or a new hospital it may be readily moved with a minimum of delay and in stallation costs. Local Juniors Win Awards Ten members of the Junior ± Woman’s Club of Southport attended the Sixty-Ninth Annual Convention of the North Carolina Federation of Women’s Clubs, Inc. in Wilmington. The Convention began on April 20 with the club being honored to have one of it’s members, Mrs. Ellen Sherrod, serve as a page. A page is chosen on the basis of the club’s overall excellence and enthusiam. This honor is only given to a club every three or four years and there are only 22 from across the state each year. Mrs. Paul Keller, State president, presided over the four day convention which consisted of meetings, speakers, workshops, business sessions, luncheons, dinners, and the giving of awards. On Wednesday evening the Southport Junior Club was awarded the State 2nd runner up Award in the Art Division of the Fine Arts Department. This was given for excellent work members did in 1970 with students as well as the annual Arts Festival. Another award was received in the Public Affairs Department, American Heritage Division, for ex cellent work in 1970 with the Brunswick Town Hostess program, the cemetary mapping project and the program by Bill Faulk on Dutchman’s Creek Ear thworks. Mrs. Sherrod attended the entire convention, which was held at the Timme Plaza Motor Inn. Mary McHose, Donnie Dodge, Trudy Hufham, Susan Herring, Emily Blake, Susan Smith, Sara Barbee, and Tina Lerch joined her on Thursday, Junior Day. That night there was a Luau with Governor and Mrs. Bob Scott as special guests. Later in the evening clubmembers dressed in pirate costumes and assisted with a “Scavenger Hunt” at fun night”. This is a special time for Juniors all over the state to get together for fun and fellowship. The final session on Friday, and awards luncheon, was attended by Mrs. Mary Barbee.
