Trial Is Continued Registrar Indicted On Felonies, Misdemeanors Obviously ill, Mrs. Alma I. Ward of Rt. 4, WhiteviUe appeared before Superior Court last Wednesday and heard District Solicitor Lee J. Greer advise the Honorable .William McKinnon that the grand jury indicted Mrs. Ward on two charges of forgery in connection with irregularities in last November’s election for the N.C. House of Representatives in the Columbus • Brunswick District. Mrs. Ward is also charged with uttering (representing false documents . as authentic), making false entries in a poll book, removing a page from the poll book and making erasures on the official tally sheet. The defendant, a widow who served as registrar for South Lees Precinct during the general election, was assisted to the front of the courtroom by a neighbor. Her attorney, D. Frank McGougan of Tabor City, advised the court that she has been seriously ill and spent a period hospitalized, and must have further hospital con finement. Judge McKinnon set bond at $5,000. Date for the trial or trials was not mentioned but the solicitor said earlier that he supposed the June 21 term of Superior court would probably be the trial date. Henry Whitesides, former solicitor of Superior Court in Gastonia, has been recom mended by Attorney General Robert Morgan for assign ment to assist Greer in prosecution of the election cases. WhiteviUe has deep roots in this section, his mother having lived in Wilmington, and Whitesides having many relatives and friends residing in New Hanover County. As far as Solicitor Greer Bolivia Downs Eagles, Nears League Diadem By JIGGS POWERS BOLIVIA — Coach Joe Best’s Bolivia Bears came within a game of copping their first Brunswick County Conference baseball championship in quite a while here, Thursday night, when they plastered a 19-2 beating on the Waccamaw Eagles. An additional win by Coach Best’s boys, or a loss by runner-up Leland (the defending champion) in games now would make the Bruins the title-holder and give Bolivia the right to represent the county and conference in the State 1-A diamond playoffs. Wayne Rabon hurled the. win for the Bruins here, Thursday, giving, up but 2 hits, a lone run and going the first three innings. He left with an 8-1 lead. George Irv ing worked the 4th and 5th frames on the hill for the • Best-men and gave up no hits, fanned 4, walked 1. Lef thander Mike Simmons came in and pitched the final two innings and gave up no hits, fanned 2, walked none. D. High and D. Small each hit 1 for 3 for Waccamaw. Bolivia was led by Catcher Don Watkins with 4 hits in 5 at-bats. Irving hit 2 for 5, with one being a grandslam homer in the 6-run Bolivia 6th. Wayne Rabon also hcmered, a solo blast in the third, and hit 2 for 3, Simmons hit 2 for 5 and Charles West was 2 for 4 for the winners. It was Bolivia’s 4th Brunswick Conference win in as many starts; it made the Bears 10-3 for the season. Waccamaw, 1-5 for the season, has lost five in the conference. Eagles 001 000 1-2-2-3 Bears 341 065 x-19-14-1 Ronnie Walton, Davis Milligan (5) and Nathaniel Hughes; Wayne Rabon, George Irving (4), Mike Simmons (6) and Don Watkins. has been able to ascertain through research, this will be the first time that anyone will have ever been tried before Superior court for alleged elections irregularities. The true bills returned by the grand jury Monday, charge that Mrs. Ward, while serving as registrar for South I^ees Precinct during the November 4 elections, failed to administer the oath required by Statute to the counters, namely Tommie G. Sarvis and M.L. Ross, im mediately at the close of the polls. That she did “unlawfully and willfully fail to keep ballot boxes used in the elections in her safe custody subject to the orders of the chairman of the Board of Elections ... in that she left them at the polling place which was left unlocked during the night, later putting them in a barn and later giving the keys to them to an unauthorized individual, namely M.L. Ross, thus failing to perform the duty which had been imposed upon her by virtue of her ap pointment ...” That Mrs. Ward did “ ... make an erasure by crossing out the figure 13 for the number of votes (received) by Arthur W. Williamson for the State House of Representatives and in serting in lieu the figure Brunswick Boys At Campbell Three Campbell College seniors from Brunswick County are among the 163 student teachers who are now engaged in classroom practice in 10 different academic fields, preliminary to certification as teachers later this spring.
