Don Watkins MVP In Two Sports Bolivia Bears Honored At Athletic Banquet Tuesday By JIGGS POWERS LELAND — Bolivia High School’s Bear athletic teams didn’t have an official “Athlete of The Year” during 1970-71, but Don Watkins, he of Bruin basketball and baseball fame, is holder of the “unofficial” honor as top athlete of his school. For Watkins, a 6-1%, 165 pound star, won trophies as the Most Valuable Player in both varsity cage and diamond action at the Bolivia High School Athletic Banquet, held at Harold’s Fish Camp, Monday night. Nelson Best, principal of Leland High School, and a former athletic mentor for some 14 years, was the banquet’s principal speaker. He is the brother of Bolivia Coach Joe Best, who spon sored the banquet. Others receiving major awards at the fete were Miss Linda Rife, as Outstanding Cheerleader of the year, and Mike Simmons, who won the trophy as batting champion of the 1971 baseball team at BHS. Honored at the dinner were the members of the 1971 Brunswick County Champion baseball club from Bolivia, also its varsity and junior varsity basketball teams and its cheerleading squad. Coach Best especially commended the Bear baseball team that won the Brunswick title for the time in 10 years. Nelson Best, introduced by Coach Best, spoke of the close-knit ties between himself, his family and Bolivia, even though his own school—Leland—and the Bear institution are arch rivals in sports. You young folks who par ticipate are the ‘cream of the crop’ at Bolivia High, you are students of today, die leaders of tomorrow. You parents who allow your children to participate have sacrificed for them to do so, but you can live with the memory that your kids are learning to lead and be top citizens of tomorrow.” Best told of several items a person and a team needs to be a “winner, a good athlete, a fine student...to succeed.” Among them he said a “must” included these ingredients, “Character, Willingness to Sacrifice, Enthusiasm, Dedication, Concentration, and Un selfishness.” Best also said that other important things athletes, and all students, should put near the top in their everyday life were: “Education; Religion, and Preparation, Readiness to “win” or succeed.” And, as a final thought and punch-line he added, “One final thing you students need to do is to thank your parents for the chance they’ve given you to become students, to become athletes..
