INurses Draw Great Praise Following the recent death of a member of her Im mediate family at Dosher Memorial Hospital, a niece of the deceased wrote the following letter to members of the staff: “My Dear Ladies, “Words seem but a small expression of gratitude for the excellent care given to my aunt, Mrs. Delena Gantt. If Aunt Sis had been aware of your presence I know she would have loved each and every one of you. Her husband sends his thanks through me, as he is unable to write. He has praised you nurses to family and friends alike since retiring home. “Needless to say we were all quite impressed by your small hospital there, and are equally disturbed at the thoughts of its closing. Hopefully the people there in your own city will see what a worthwhile tacuny iney nave in their midst. “Mrs. Gantt’s family, those of us who met you, have asked that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to J. Arthur Dosher Memorial Hospital. Though they will not amass any great amount of money, maybe it will show your board of trustees that many people outside of your town profit by the hospital’s fine services. “Continue the good work ladies, and may God bless each and every one of you. “Many thanks too for the kindness shown to a nurse ‘on the other side of the fence’. I shall never forget you all. “Susan Warren” Mrs. Warren is a registered nurse who has had wide experience while working on the staff of several large hospitals. WEATHER 11.30 JOHNNY ( ARSON SHOW The Way It Was This is a photograph taken of the late Capt. Sonny Dosher, member of the U.S. Lighthouse Service, standing in the doorway of Bald Head Lighthouse, still the most famous landmark of this nearby tropical island. Capt. Dosher was another in the long line of local residents who spent their years protecting lives and property along the Atlantic coast. This picture is includea in “Capt. Charlie and the Lights of the Lower Cape Fear,” a volume authored by Mrs. Ethel Herring of Winston - Salem. Waterfront One fellow who was in terested in our recent account of a visit to Norway was Herman Sellers of Southport, who served aboard a U.S. destroyer on escort duty for the Murmansk run during World War II. “How did you like the fiords” Herman asked. We told him we thought they were great, some of the most beautiful scenery we ever saw. “Did they tell you how deep they are?” he wanted to know. We told him they said they were as deep as the mountains around them are high, and that's plenty deep. Herman also wanted to know if we had noticed anything peculiar about the echoes in the fiords. We had not, and told him so. “Well, when we were there during the war the fiords would pick up the sound of German planes on bombing missions long before they were in sight and that gave us a chance to get ready for them. All of us thought the fiords were fine.” Herman was not the only member of his family on duty in the Navy in that area during World War II. His uncle Remnal Hewett had volunteered for Navy duty and was placed aboard a merchant vessel as a member of the Naval gun crew for a trip on the Mur mansk run. That was con CARD OF THANKS The family of Andrew Lesh wishes to thank all friends and relatives for their kind ness and sympathy during the sickness and loss of Mr. Lesh. The Andrew Lesh Family sidered to be among the most hazardous assignments in the Navy during the early days of the war, because the German bombers were close enough to home base to give them a fit. Incidentally, we always held a special admiration for Remnal because he had volunteered for service when there was no threat of his being drafted. He was a veteran of World War I in which he served in the Army. On Friday while fishing near the light tower aboard the Idle On II, Capt. Billy Potter reported losing the hatch cover from this South port - based charterboat. Sunday while out with a party aboard the Idle On III, Capt. Larry Stubbs spotted the floating hatch cover, retrieved it and returned it to the sister vessel in the Watts fleet. Larry said he found it about 12 miles from where it had been lost overboard three days earlier. What would you say the odds are against that ever happening again? Fishing must have been good in the Cape Fear River, for not in a long time have we seen so many boats working near the old U.S. Quarrantine Station and in the area bet ween Battery Island and Bald Head. We never heard what they were catching. The Southport - Fort Fisher ferry still is the biggest bargain boatride we know about. They don’t need any free advertising this time of year for vehicular traffic because usually the deck is filled to capacity. But there are facilities for hauling walk - on passengers, and there is plenty of room for more than usually make the trip. We highly recommend this as an interesting thing to do, particularly for upstate visitors. For Heritage House Early Tools Being Sought Implements used to ease life in past years — hand tools, farm tools, ingenious kitchen equip ment — are needed to round out the display at Heritage House during the Fourth of July Festival in Southport. Antique furniture, glassware and toys and period clothing are among the many items to be shown at the display. Momentoes of American wars also have been suggested as display items. The loan of these and other treasures from the homes of Southport and neighboring communities is essential to the success of Heritage House, a joint project of Southport’s two woman’s clubs and three garden clubs. The exhibit will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. July 2 and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 3 and 4. at the Community Building on the waterfront. Admission will be free and noting will be for sale. Hayride Set Interested youth and members of the Brunswick UMYF Sub - District will have a hayride and wiener roast this Sunday. All youth are asked to meet at the Boiling Spring Lakes service station at 6 p.m. From there they will travel by tractor-drawn wagons to Black Snake where they will enjoy a wiener roast, fellowship singing and a devotional service. The cost per individual will be $1.50. A date or friend may be invited. Each person should bring a blanket. The hayride will be chaperoned by Mr. and Mrs. Wright Clemmons of Bolivia. At the same time (shown in the lower right of the above photo) a 100 - lb. - plus turtle was beached by Milton Mullerweiss (left), getting an assist from A1 Dosher. Watson kept his catch for supper; the turtle was immediately released and soon found deep water.
