The Randolph Bulletin. PUBLISHED EVERY THURSDAY. PRICE ONE DOLLAR A YEAR U. S. HAYES, Editor, E. A. WOODDELL, Publisher. Entered as second-class matter June 2nd, 1905, at the post office at Ashe boro, N. C, under the act of Congress of March 3rd 1879. Judge Parker has undoubtedly heard from the election of 1904. At Charlotte recently he stated in his speech before the manu facturers club that the democrat ic party suffered the worst de feat in its history in that year. Strange how fast news travels these days. It is announced from Washing ton that Congressman Elliott of South Carolina has been appoint ed commissioner to mark the graves of confederate soldiers, who died in northern prisons. North Carolina had at least two candidates for the position, but the South Carolinian had the long est pole and consequently knock ed the persimmon. We would have been glad if our own geni al after dinner speaking Colonel from Ashboro had gotten the place. One part of the grand jury's report which will be found in another column, has a very pa thetic side to it. We refer to the part which states that seven insane people are confined in the County home. It is a great mis fortune for any human being to become insane, and wander through life in darkness and gloom. The very best equipped insane asylum affords poor enough accommodations for these poor unfortunates. It is a shame and disgrace to the State to al low its indigent insane to lan guish in jails and county homes. There is absolutely no excuse for such a state of affairs. The State is rich and prosperous and amply able to care for all of its insane. For the sake of human ity, something should be done to mitigate the sufferings of its most unfortunate class of sub jects. When the factory hands were paid off at High Point Saturday, thirty factories notified their men that after April 2nd, all em ployes belonging to labor unions would be discharged. About fifteen hundred men will be effected by this order. Natural ly the union men resent this as an injustice to them, and what the outcome of the rupture will be is hard to foreseo at this time. Labor unions have Deen gaining strength in all industrial centers for a number of years, and now nearly all the working men in the mining regions and manufac turing cities are organized, ex cept in the South. However, the Southern manufacturers may just as well prepare to meet the conditions which union labor will bring, because it is coming. Gradually and little by little the unions will gain ground until union labor will be recognized in the South as it is in the East, North and West. Randolph County is now spend ing over six thousand dollars an nually on her convict system of road working. This large sum of hard earned cash which the tax payer puts into the county slot is practically wasted so far as any permanent improvement to the county roads is concerned. The people generally see and know that their money is being squan dered and they cry out against it, but to no purpose. No move has been made to change the system which has proved itself to be a failure. The people are willing to pay six thousand dol lars a year or even more for road improvements but they are not willing to continue an anti quated system which has cost the county already nearly $100, 000, and has not added one rod of permanently improved road in the county. Citizens of Rand olph County, call a county con vention and discuss the subject. Ask for what you want and you will get it. Doctors Are Puzzled. The remarkable recovery of Kenneth Mclver, of Vanceboro, Me., is the subject of much in terest to the medical fraternity and a wide circle of friends. He says of his case: "Owing to severe inflammation of the Throat and congestion of the Lungs, three doctors gave me up to die, when, as a last resort; I was in duced to try Dr. King's New Discovery and I am happy to say, it saved my life. "Cures the worst Cough and Colds, Bron chittis, Tonsilitis, Weak Lungs, Hoarseness and Lagrippe. Guar anteed at Ashboro Drug Co. and Standard Drug Store. 50c and -$100 Trial bottle free. A CLEAN CAMPAIGN. Much has been said along the line of corrupt politics and we have seen evidences in other states that the people at large are in favor of cleaning out the old political rings and grafters. In the coming campaign in this state it will be the duty of every law abiding citizen to see to it that the law is enforced and that the buying and selling of votes be stopped. If our free institu tions are to continue, every American citizen should exer cise the right to vote without fear of punishment, or the hope of reward. Any one who sells his vote, should be disfranchised and every one who buys a vote is a corruptionist and should be dealt with according to law. Coming directly to the campa ign in Randolph County, we hope to see the contest carried on in such a manner that no fair mind ed person can say that any ir regularities have been practiced. Why not make this a clean cam paign, free from all political cor ruption and corrupting influen ces? Free from all bitterness and malice? Every voter should inform himself on the issues and then go to the polls and there exercise his right as an indepen dent, freeborn American citizen. Every man who does this belongs to that vast army who are fight ing for clean politics. Let purity and honesty be the motto, this fall and let all lovers of law and order see to it that the result of the election will record the will of the people and not the will of a ring of corrupting politicians. THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. The Prospects for the Near Future Dis cussed by a Looker-On in Venice The Difference Between the Two Parties Changes Needed. "What is the news, old fel low?" asked an Observer man of a well-known but sleeping Re publican yesterday. "I have none; I am a Looker on in Venice," was the reply. "Yes but I have never seen the day that you did not have an opinion about the party of your choice and its prospects?" "O, I have been thinking of the present row and its possible results," he admitted. "Well, what do you think will be the final outcome of it all?" "I believe that it will result in the complete re-organization of the party machinery and the ig noring of all factions at the next State convention. The rank and file of the Republican party is not different from that of any other party, and the voters are looking for a deliverer. "The Republican party does not want to go back to the days of the old moss-back, such as a writer in The Statesville Land mark recently referred to, when the railroads controlled the party. It then represented the classes and not the masses. The situa tion has changed, but I do not know that things have improved much, for the asses have taken the place of the classes. "The strength of the party to day rests in its young men, many of whom are strong-minded, up right fellows, who would follow an honest, bold leader. These young men want a party with a policy that will upbuild the State and make for better things; they stand for fixed principles and honest convictions, and a party to hold and inspire them must stand for something good." "Do you think that your part y, has any chance to win in North Carolina at any early date?" "Yes, with the right sort of changes. The Republican party is said to be composed of rascals. The difference between the two parties in the State is that the Democrats are not exposing and indicting their rascals while the Republicans are making a clean sweep. I say this in view of the facts of certain things that have happened in the State in connec tion with a certain railroad, and in this and other counties. I have come to the conclusion that if all scamps in both parties were indicted and prosecuted the State convention would be held at the same place the next time. "The Democratic party has de generated into a local organiza tion. Your leaders are divided between Hearst and Bryan, and the conservative element has no more show than a Republican would have in your party. "Therefore, I say that we have a chance. The young men of the Republican party wish to make a clean house, a fit place for the conservative men of the Democratic party. It looks to me like we were in the same boat the small men are running the party machinery. The Republi cans have never rallied since the dictatorship of Senator Prichard. "But, as I said at the beginning, I think there are hopes for us. Charlotte Observor. SUPERIOR COURT. Continued From Last Week. Trav. Miller attempt with dead ly weapon, not guilty. Druggist Must Pay the State Tax. State Auditor B. F. Dixon re cently issued a notice to the drug gists of the State in answer to many inquiries, giving a list of alcoholic compounds labeled med icines arid held out to the public as remedies for diseases, to sell which, after April 1, it will be necessary for the druggist to take out regular government license, the list of so-called "med icines" requiring liquor license having been made by the United States revenue department last September. Here is the notice, which Auditor Dixon asks State papers to copy: THE OFFICIAL NOTICE "To the Druggists of North Carolina: "I have had several inquiries, concerning alcoholic compounds labeled as medicines and held out to the public as re medies for diseases, and I wish to say I have secured the follow ing list from the revenue depart ment at Raleigh, of medicines which are within the terms of the ruling of September 12 1905, which is -that all druggists sell ing the following medicines, after the first day of April, 1906, will be subjected to fines and penalties, unless they take out a regular liquor license tax: Atwood's La Grippe Specific, Cuban Gingeric, De Witt's Stomach Bitters, Dr. Bouvier's Buchu Gin, Dr. Fowler's Meat and Malt, Duff's Malt Whiskey, Gilbert's Rejuvinating Iron and Herb Juice, Hostetter's Stomach Bitters, Kudros, Peruna, Rock Candy Cough Cure." By Shakespeare, Jr. To build or not to build that is the question!. Whether it would be better for us to obey The commands of the judge and grand jury,. To build a new court house and place Fire-proof vaults therein to protect the County records, or to disregard these Foolish mandates and thus continue our Party in power 'tis a consummation Devoutly to be wished. To build to die To die perchance jjoliticalhj-a.ye there's the rub I To build would raise the tax rate and then These pesky Republicans would join with A few disgruntled Democrats who Have never had any office and would . Send us to that political grave That undiscovered country, from whose bourne No politician ever returns puzzles the will, And makes us rather hold on to what we have, Than to experiment in things we know not of. Thus expediency does make cowards of us, Who are the servants of the people. We fear To build, lest it would be unpopular and We fear not to build lest that also will Be unpopular. Consequently we will Bid farewell to our consciences and our duty, Until we feel the popular pulse and until After the next election, when if we are satisfied That our political lives will not be In jeopardy, we will proceed To build and further fasten our hold On posterity and a suffering public. For headache, constipation, etc., j TW's T.itlfi Liver Pills are best, i They cleanse and tonic the liver. Sold by Ashboro Drug L-o. Republicanism Popular The Sub-Committee of the Senate has recommended the confirmation of Mr. Holton's nomination to succede himself as Distict Attorney. This ends the fight. While we doubt the wis dom in the third term appoint ments, it is the duty of every loyal Republican to accept the result in good faith, turn his eyes to the future and make the best fight possible. It is time for fac tional strife to cease. We must present a solid front to the enemy in the coming campaign. Let no man put personal interest above the great principles of Re publicanism as espoused by Lin coln, Grant, McKinley and Roosevelt. There has never been a day in its history when the principles and policies of the Republican party were as popu lar, North or South, as they are today. If the party loses grouud in the coming campaign, it will be due to factional folly and not to the strength of the enemy. Shelby Aurora. A COLD, A COUGH CON SUMPTION.
