Ward:- We the grand jury for the March term of court 1906; beg leave to submit the following report: We have completed the busi ness before our body and have returned all bills submitted to us for action and made present ments of all matters which are within our knowledge. We sent a committee to the County Home and find 24 inmates, as follows: 9 white males, 12 white females, 1 colored male and 2 colored fe males, four of the white are sane and seven insane, ten are idiots, the colored are all sane. We visited the several rooms and found the inmates we'l fed and sufficiently clothed, they all nave plenty of fire-wood and good bedding. The general con dition of the County Home is good. We have visited the county jail and find it; well kept. We found five prisoners in jail at this time. The jail is old and unsafe and we recommend that a new jail be constructed with j modern cells and other equip ments. After stating that the visited the various offices in the court house and found them in good condition, the report continues: We find the public records in an unsafe condition, as there are no fire proof vaults in which to keep them. We therefore rec ommend that the county com missioners build a new court house with modern equipments, in keeping apace with the times, 111. 1 1 . A weann ana population ot our county. In many cities throughout the state a determined effort is being made to close the dens of iniquity which are the cause of so much suffering and sin. And while we would say no word which could pos bly be construed as opposing or belittling this effort in behalf i of morality, we believe that the evil can be eradicated only by digging it out by the roots and that the roots of the evil lies in public opinion which tolerates a double, standard of morality for men and women. As long as this continues iust so long will the evil complained of continue. The law can do something, but public opinion must effect a cure if a cure is to be effe2ted. The method of social and judi cial pro:eJ. ire which holds up to scorn and infamy a poor weak sinning woman and throws her contempteously from the doors of society and yet receives the man in whose blackened soul was born the cause of her downfall appeals to the thoughtful as be ing in accord with the laws of neither God nor man. This is a subject which is at best difficult to discuss in the columns of the Mr. R. P. Cox, living near Ashboro caught an owl this week measuring forty-six inches from tip to tip.
