j Rush For Citizenship
i Makes Judge Suspicious
Denver —CP)— A public pension
is an “unworthy incentive” for an
: alien to seek United States citizen
ship. Judge -T. Foster Symes of fed
eral district court told four candi
dates whose citizenship applica
tions he rejected.
One of the four had lived in the
United States 60 years and said he
j only recently discovered he was
! not a citizen.
“It seems odd you would discov
er it just when Colorado decides
to pay a $45 a month old age pen
sion”, the judge said. One of the
qualifications for pension is .citi
zenship.

A Dictatorship
JOSEPH PILSUDSKI was a so
cial revolutionary working for
the future of Poland when the
World War burst on Europe. He
met Edward Smigly-Rydz. Im
pressed by the patriotism and the
bearing of this young man, he j
chose him as his first disciple.
Followed the great war, Poland's
freedom and the rise of Pilsudski
as master of his country.
In May, 1935, Pilsudski died. Ho
left this testament: “I appoint
Gen. Edward Smigly-Rydz first
defender of the fatherland. . . .”
A few days later, President Ignacy
Moscicki announced the elevation
of Smigly-Rydz to the post of In
spector General of the Forces.
Thus Poland's new dictator was
catapulted into his job.
And a strenuous job it is! For
Smigly-Rydz, now only 51, is no
ordinary dictator. He is, instead,
1 a guiding hand, a strong figure in
the background, a tradition. His
nation lies between Red Russia
and Nazi Germany—can he keep
these enemies apart? His nation
is a republic surrounded by iron
rule—can he preserve the national
unity?
Quiet st'ident of art and phil
osophy, t le Marshal of Poland
may hold the fate of Europe in
his hands these days. Much de
pends on whether
he can maintain
Poland’s neutral
ity. Hailed every
where in Poland
as the “First De
fender,” he is
shown here on a
current Polish
stamp.
