Wise Henoin- inated. 1 Richmond, Va., July 30.— I The Democratic convention of the third Uougressional district met here at noon and unani mously re-nominated Hon. Geo. D. Wise for Congress. A SPEC OF WAR IN CHINA. London, July 30.—A dispatch from Foo Chow to the Times states that great tension and ex citement prevails in that city among both foreigners and Chinese. The French men-of- war lying off that port are under steam and cleared for action. High authority in Foo Chow, however declares peace will cer tainly be maintained. BEHPSEJ WINS THE \FIGMT IN TWENTY-ONE ROUNDS. !New York, July 30.—The Dcmp«ey and Fulljames fight for $2,000, was decided this morning. INed Mellohan was referee. Dempsey was seconded by Arthur Chambers and Prof. Watson Fulljames. was seconded by John Flood and Barney Apron; umpire was Jim Shanau, a well-known sporting man. The fight was a desperate one. D* mpsey gained the first blood and the first knock-down, and won in 21 rounds, lasting 35 minutes. COSTLY FUN. Cincinnati, July 31.—A ter rible explosion occurred in the house of Henry Upmeier, 21 Oj enoii street, this morning. A young son of Upmeier brought home an uuexploded rocket that had fallen from the Highland House, where there had been an exhibition of fireworks la.st night. The lad tried to open it, but failing to do so his mother seized a hatchet and dealt it a severe blow. A terrific explo sion fallowed. Mrs. Upmeir was iatall;s injured, Ida Upmeier, aged twelve, fatally injured, Charles Udmeier, aged six, se verely hurt, and Phillip Hill, aged ten, slightly injured. It was ii six-pouud rocket. The vicinity of tJie explosion was fearfully wrecked. TEE CHOLERA CONTIN UES TO SPREAD-DOC TORS ASS^AULTED. Marseilles, July 30—The scales of melons have been pro hibited within the city. The cholera is gaining in area what it is losing in intensity. The disease has made its appearance in several villages which had previously been exempt. Owing to proper iirejudice it is positive ly dangerous for doctors to walk aloue in the suburbs at night. One instance is reported of a doctor, who while visiting a wo man who had been seized with cholera, was assaulted by her son who drew' a revolver and compelled him to leave the house. Several other doctors have also been assaulted. Paris, July 30.—There were 12 deaths from cholera at Mar seilles last night and 10 at Tou lon. The force of the epidemic in these two cities continues to decline. About three hundred fugitives have returned to their homes in the last two days. E. Scoville do not effect the firm to the ex tent of $1, and thatjthese securi ties offered for liypothecatiou and retransfer which were the individual property of Mr. Day will all probably be discovered. W. II. Brown & Co., warn all parties against negotiation any certificates of stock standing in the name of Henry Day in the following companies as the same have been stolen : Rochester & Pittsburg railroad company, Iron Silver company, Horn silver United States Trust company and American Cable company. SICK CATTLE AT CHICAGO. CilTCAGO, July 30,—The arri val of a number of sick cattle having been reported at the Un ion stock yards in this city, an examination was made by a num ber of veterinarians this morn ing, who are not yet ready to submit theirofficialreport. The fact is known, however, that they agreed that the disorder is Texas fever, superinduced by drinking water strongly impreg nated with alkali. The cattle have been securely quarantined and isolated. Those in the lot that are unaffected are to be slaughtered, subject to the in spection of the health depart ment. Those that are unable to recover are being shot, and those that are droopy will be held in quarantine for futher develop ments. July 15-tf. WHAT NEXTf A member of congress tries TO COMMIT suicide. Two of the shots were in the ba-jk .•[■ the head, and depressed the skull, but did not penetrate the brain. His chances for re covery are slight. He had been diiukiug hard recently, and to that circumstances is due his present condition. He went about the deed with great de termination and deliberation. He shipped his trunks home to Kentucky, then entered another room some distance from the one ho, had been occupying, fired five shots, and when he heard sem'ch was being made for the locality of the shootibg he unlocked the door,and stream ing with blood, admitted to the officers, saying that he ivas; afraid that he had not been suc cessful, but he would be another tijiie. He then collapsed, and is now at the Providence Hospital, his life hanging by a slender thread. For Sherift*.
