Eiitors Sylvan Valley News:
B. C Batson, of Calvert, was in
our section last weelv after sweet
potato seed.
Terrell Bagwell who has been
attending school at Brevard has
returned home and gone to work
on the farm.
Miss Katie Scruggs is spend
ing awhile on East Fork. She
was greatly missed in our vicin
ity Sunday, especially by “Jane.”
We wonder if Uucle Zeke will
get any “April Fools.” Perhaps
the correspondent who thought
him so nice looking will write
him one.
Miss Alice Whitmire, po t
office clerk at Loftis, was a visitor
in our section Saturday and Sun
day. We are always glad to see
her among us.
'Frank Bagwell had the misfor
tune to cut his knee severely last
week, while pruning an apple
tree. H-3 can't walk as yet, but
is doing very well and we hope
soon to see him out again.
Tiie thermometer regisled at
80 this morning and we are
afraid our fruit w’ill be killed,
bul we hope not. As we didn’t
have scarcely any last year we
are getting hungry for some.
Miss Leona Gidney, accompa
nied by Frank Hay good, of River
View, S. C., was present at the
organization of the Sunday school
last Sunday. We wonder if she
contemplates moving her board
ing place to South Carolina in the
near future?
One of our Reba bo3’s went to
town last week and put in several
iruesses on the gotird contest
He says he is going to get the
cooking range, then he's going to
housekeeping. Hurrah for him!
Quite a rich idea, we think. If
he could be fortunate enough to
win the five-dollar gold piece and
get something to (;ook on the
range he would be O. K.
Sunshine.
Tho Now Yorlc Medico-Lesal society
proposes a bill in the New York state
legislature institutln.ti: the wliii)ping
post as Ji punishment for wife beatintj.
The president of the society says: “The
present system of piinishment is whollj’
ina(le<iuate. It does not deter. The
Ki'cat stn^ani of wretched and de.spair-
injr women that passes us is one of the
indescribable horrors of civilization.”
It is poiiilod ont that in Delaware,
where tho whipi)injr post is employed
to roi'.i’ess this instinct of barbarism in
liiOn, wife beatinj; is almost wholly un
known.
A bill in the N(‘av York legislatnre
proposes to inipri.son for two years per
sons fouii(4, ^'nilty of furnisliinj? pool
rooms with racing news. This would
be ronjxh on the operators emiiloyed by
teleirraph comitanies, but it mifjht have
the effect of stopping; one form of gam-
blinjx.
The annonncenuMit that Eiiirlisli im
ports of refri^t'vated meat from the
Arjjentine liepnblic have trebled within
the last few y<‘ars would secMii to indi
cate that some one was able to sidestep
the great American packing house com
bine.

College athletes are wanted by the
company that has the roller chair con

looks like a great chance for pushing
young men.
There are indications that the Mor-
tr.on apostles are looking to the United
States senate committee on privileges
and elections for their next revelation.
Another marked difference between
the Russian and .Japanese generalissi
