Road Master J. M. Fitzgerald and E-ineer J. W. Britt, were here Fri day and surveyed and staked off a line for the building of a new switch on the East side of the main track. The' switch will begin just no:th of Broad street, and be 1700 -feet long. When this i finished it' will give plenty of car room at our depot. Koad Master Fitzgerald says there is a good deal more work on the line te fore the fast trains can go on. The Baptist State Sunday School Convention met in Winston on Thursday the 14th, with a large num ber of prominent men from different sections of the State in attendance besides a large pr.mber of delegates. Mr. Rominger was made Chairman, . and Mr. J. M. Beaty, of Smithfield, Secretary. Quite a lot of fine ad- dresies and lectures were de livered during the session. The peo- ple of Winstou-Salem, as is usual with them, entertained the visitor royally. The Convention was one of W if the most enjoyed as well as most honr-fu'ial that they haxe evei held. Mr O. P, Middleton, of Warsaw. N. C was in tbe city yesterday in the interest of Brower Bros, of New York Mr. Jas. Pe:raall has qualified as Justice of the Peace for Averaiboro towns-dp. Mr. S. II. Pittraan and wife, of Sraithfield spent Saturday and Sun ty nhh their daujliter, Mra. J. W. Lane. Mrs. Mary J. Jones, Miss Mollie Jones and Mr. Joe Jor.e3, of Nash ville, N. C, are visiting the family of Mr J. O. Gordon. Mr. J. D. Harnes was called to Jones !oro Sunday to see his sitk uncle, Mr. Rorr Barnes. Town Convention. The citizens of the town assembled Friday night in the Scarborough Hall in a town Convention. Dr. M. W. Harper c tiled the meeting to order and 8'ated the object. By motion of Mr. E. Lee, Dr. Har per was male permanent chairman, and G. K. Grantham Secretary. Tbe votewas decided to be taken by bal lot, the candidate receiving the high est number of votes to be the norai nce. Mr. J. B. Holland was appoint ed box holder, and Messrs. J. C. Cox and J. D. Barnes tellers, The chairman then announced the Convention was redy for nomina tions for Mayor. When the names of Messrs. E. A. Parker and J ah. F, Phillips were placed in nomination. The vote wa3 taken and Mr. Parker receiving 50 vote3, the highest num ber cast, was declared the nominee for Mayor. Messrs, Eldridgc Lee, Jas. A Tay lor, P. T. Massengill, J. H.Pope, Dr. F. T. Moore, J, L. Tho mp ton, II . C. McNeill, and M. F, Gainey, were put in nomination lor lommissionors. Dr. Moore on first ballot rece.ved 46 votes, the highest cast, was nominat ed. With the above names still in, Mr, Jas. Pearsall wa3 added, and the vote taken stood 5.3 for Mr. J. H. Pope, and he was declared the second nominee. Messrs. Ja3. A. Taylor and El- dridge Lee withdrew in favor of Mr. P. T. Massengill, and by motion the rules of the Convention were suspend ed, and Mr. Massengill nominated by acclimation. Blessrs. J. C. Cox and Q. K. Gran- tha'G were then put in nomination, Mr. GruHham witLdrcw his name, and Mr. Cox was nominated by ac cLtmalioti. The chairman then announced that an Executive! Committee should be lected, cosseting of 3, for the next term, Mes-rs. M. W. Ha-per, Lee J, Best, and Jas Pearsall were chosen, The Convention adjourned sine-die. Da, M. W Harpei:, Chairman. G. K. First will say three cheers for my old North Carolina friend, Mr. Mc Coy. Byrd, I wish him and his twin babies success. Bermuda is situated on the Wil mington, Columbia & Augusta- Rail Road, near Marion court house, in the midst of a fine farming section. Mr. J. C. Johnson, for some time past a salesman for A. Witcower. has accepted a place with a Philadelphia Wholesale House, and is now on the road. Gardens are looking fine, spring - sallad will soon be as plentiful as spring bonnets. Miss Blaneh Hays is attending Reedy Creek High School. Mrs. J. F. Ritters is visiting in Cumberland county, your State. Miss Danie Monroe left last week for Columbia Female College Miss Roe McKinzie is yi'ins Scotland. Misses Lulaand Hettie Carmichael are attending the Marion Graded School, Miss Edna Gaddie, of Robinson count, N. C, is vuiting friends here. One of our boys seems to be afflic ted with a severe attack of matrimon ial fever just now, the writer eympa thizes wbitu him. On last Sunday morning about 5 o'clock, Mr, R. L. Lane suffered a severe loss by fire, loosing both bis barn and stables, 2 fine mules, 1 fine horse and bujig', also lst his office and furniture. The loss is estimated at 1500, r.o insurance.
