ASHEVILLE DAILY CITIZEN: THURSDAY EVENING, OCTOBER 15, 18. 1. ASHEVILLE DAILY CITIZEN. Bv RANDOLPH-KERR PRINTING CO. TnnDin.T ClTllKK. Democratic, i published erery afternoon (except Sundaj ) at the lol lowing rates srricty cask : ONB YRAK Six Month, J "" Thkrr Mouth, 1 " Onk Month I NR WRRK 1,1 THTRSDAY, OCTOHKR 15, 1HI1. The New York Heralil estimates the cost of Porter's census at $12,000,000. To get at the value of that same census, take off the twelve, and divide the remain der by the salary Blair, of New Hamp shire, drew a, minister of China. Tub Columbian river at Vancouver is to be bridged, and the Charleston News and Courier say, that "among the en gineering difficulties presented in thm un dertaking, the most notable has been Hie sandy foundation, rendering it necessary to go down some eighty feel below low water to obtain a firm foundation," That is by no means an unprecedented depth to sink bridge piers. Those at St. Louis did not find bed-rock bottom until they had been sunk 110 feet below low water. It is announced that SpiirL-eon the great Haptist preacher will go abroad to fully recover from his illness and that liis pulpit will temporarily lie occupied by Rev. A. T. I'iersnn, of Philadelphia. Mr. I'icrson is a Presbyterian of thePresln teriaus, a profound student of the Hible, powerfully strong in denunciation, full ul tire, a close and logical reasoner. He never brings a written sermon into the pulpit, speaking very rapidly from a few notes which he refers to from time to time. He will be a great contrast to Spurgeon. The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world. Thomas Power t ''Connor's life ol Parnell saysthat among his"earliest influence, were the stories lie heard in his childhood from an old servant of the family, narrating the horrible cruelties the Irish suffered during the rebellion, and these made Parnell the man he be came. From his mother also were de rived traditions severely hostile to the existing relations of Hngland am Ireland." O'Connor adds that Parnell in his chief characteristics, was mori American than either Irish or linglisli. Font Pullman cars attached to. the fast west bound express train on the Central Pacific railroad were thniwn from the track near Collax, Cat., liv train-wrecker, who drew the, pikes Iroin the rails. The sleepini: ear Santa Cm rolling ht'lv teet down an embankment. The ten passengers in it were nut liinlseri ously. This accident has an especial ii tcrest just now in that the attempt was very like that at llnstian's bridge it there wa, such attempt tiiere. The amount of iuate dcrilislincss required would be about tlie same in buih cases, that in North Carolina reipiiriag t he more fiendishncss, however, in that the raits were removed on a bridge lit at all I where the loss of life was almost certain to be great. The Dl Herein-.'. What amount ol money do the people ot the 1'nited States have tu nay to the federal government in the way of taritl taxes and bounties to the manufacturers by reason of the tarilf' In round num bers it is estimated at httcen hundred millions of dollars. That is about $17 per head for every man, woman and child. Of this amount the tanners have to pay about two-thirds, or ten hundred millions. Now if you stop all this tax, except what is necessary to uny the ex penses of the government, would the farmer want ta borrow money' The democratic, doctrine is and always has been financially a pour government and a rich people. The republicans want a rn.li governinentaud a pour people. A govern ment has no sort ot use lor more money than is necessary to pay its ex ileuses When il has more, it will be sipiamlereil just as the Inst republican billion dollar congress squandered it. I, It a Failure T The Mountain Home of Journalistic ignorance, in it, abortion of an issue Tuesday, attempts to ridicule Tut; Citi zen because so far it has failed to secure a reduction of the street car tare. The Journal may ridicule as much as it pleases, but when it does so it ridicules the score, of people who have used the column, of The Citizen to express their indignation at this street car fare gouge. When the Journal sneers and says, "we call that failure," it sneers at the Sou citizen, of Aiheville, of every grade and calling in life, who composed the mass meeting which met in the ctmrt house to protest against this outrage. The Journal is nn doubt satisfied with itself in thus saving, by indirection, be cause it has not the courage to sav it openly, "damn the people," hut unless signs fail, it will speedily find out that the people have not done with this 10 cent tare question yet. And the people will not forget the attitude of the Journal on this, tia well us many other quest jams affecting their interests and rights. The Journal can hug its little free pass, and think itself very large, because it makes no difference to the Journal whether the street car fare is five cent, or five dollar,, but when the laboring men and poor people of Asheville are being imposed upon, they have a right to expect better thing, from a sheet claiming to sail under the banner of anti monopoly. It Wm a Fake. From the Salisbury Herald. A special from Sta'esville to the Dur ham Globe of Saturduy says another al leged attempt wan made Saturday morn ing to wreck the passenger train at- Bos tian bridge. The Herald believes there iB no foundation for this report, and thinks some sensationalist has been imposing on the Globe. No train passe, Bostain's bridge by daylight except No. 11, which leave, Salisbury about noon, and reaches there between 1 and 2 o'clock. Inquiry was made at the depot this morning, and nothing wa, known of the attempt to wreck the train ; nor is it believed that un attempt was made. THK HOTKI.il.
