Attorney Gen eral Miller has made a report to Con gress in regard to business of the depart ment of justice during the last fiscal year, showing that it is continually and largely increasing. Claims for Indian deprada dations already filed are over S.000 in number and aggregating over $33,000,, 000. The work ot the United States Supreme court is being reduced. The Attorney General suggests that some provision be enacted by Congress for the payment ol district altornevs tor sevencs in circuit courts so that it will not lie left to the discretion of the Attorney General. The attornev general, in regard to the Southern claims says: "lly the report of the assistant attorney general Having charge of the business of the government in the Court of Claims other than that pertaining to the Indian depradations a largely increased volume of work during the past vcaxjfi shown. The Philadelphia Times of Tuesday outains an account of the trouble which occurred in that city Monday be tween John V. Sir.nthcrs rind Weldon E. Williamson of Asiieville. The Times' ac count savs. "Yesterday morning at the breakfast table Williamson said tohisfriend. 'Why on"t you change your face?' referring to something that had happened the night before. To this Smathers replied with some heat. Williamson, notwithstand ing the fact that there were ladies at the table, it is stated, made use of profane anguage. To this Smathers replied ina similar way, and they left the table ene mies. liotli attended a clinic at the hospital afterwards, but Williamson left before Smathers, ni?d, wh"n the class left the building, was waiting lor hull in the hall way leading to the student's exit. The stories of those present differ as to what happened afterwards, but the general torv is that bmatticrs walked up to uie waiting man and demanded tnat lie apologize for his words ol the morning. This renewed the quarrel, and they walked out to the pavement, where, some of the students say, Williamson kicked Smathers on the leg. 'Smathers then drew a revolver Irom his pocket and fired at his antagonist's tbdomen. l!v poor marksmanship lie missed the intended spot and the bullet passed entirely through the wounded man's thigh anil fell to the pavement. Across the street was a large pacKing box standing on the edge ol the pave ment. Helore another shot could lie nrcd Williamson ran over nnn dodged behind this box. His frenzied opponent pur sued him. hruiE us he ran. One more shot took effect, near the first wound but the other two bullets lodged M the wooden box. Smathers then threw down the imtol and ran into the hospital building, where he tried to hide, but was soon altcrward irrcsted bv Reserve Policeman Donahue and taken to the central station About an hour afterwards Dr. l orbcs went before a magistrate and stated that the wounded man was in ii mI anger of death. Hail was then fixed at $1,000 nd the doctor went the prisoners surety. Smathers was seen at his room last night surrounded uy n party oi sympa thetic friends. '1 do not care to discuss the cr.se nt present,' he said. 'You sec it would not look well in me to give my side of the affair at present. No, the mutter is traceable to some other thing than our quarrel at the table. I would not want the real cause published. We were too good friends to quarrel over words or money, either." THE BISHOP'S JOKE, Tle Charlotte People Wauled lo li.ee p nr. creav. The Charlotte Observer's Winston cor respondent relates one of Ilishop Ucn drix's jokes in this way : "Messrs. U. M. Andrews and . S. Spencer of Charlotte were here yesterday consulting with the bishop relative to the report that Dr. Creasy was to be re moved to Asiieville. "A good one' ( which conies from an authenticated source) is told on the presiding elder of the Charlotte district. He was discussing the question with the bishop about Dr. Creasy being sent to Asiieville he of course was op posed to the change. Ihc bishop asked the presiding elder if Dr. Creasv's health was not rather bad just now. 'Yes,' replied Mr. Tver, 'he appears to be sul fa iug with nervous prostration.' 'Well,' said Hishop Hendrix, 'perhaps a change would do him good,' It is needless to add that the presiding elder 'cut short oil' his argument on the line of Dr. Creasy's health." WHOLKHAU: VS. Washington, Dec. s . The result of the recent elections will have no effect on the work of the Senate committee on finance, which has for almost two years been examining into the effect of the tariff laws upon imports tind exports, growth, development, production and prices ot agricultural and manufactured irtielcs at home and abroad, and upon wages, domestic aud foreign. The approaching change in adminis tration will, however, help on the re port, and cause it to be submitted in its entirety at this session, instead of going over until the fifty-third Congress, as it would had the Kepublicans been suc cessful. Mr. Aldrich, chairman of the sub com mittee conducting the investigation said today that he expected to be able to submit a partial report within the next two weeks covering that part of the in quiry which relates to the wholesale trade and prices. The investigation begins with 18-10 and conies down to the end of October, 1892, and is very thorough. It is now in press and will be ready within two weeks. IN CONcSUKHS. It remains for Senator Vance, of North Carolina, to give the most novel solution of the great silver problem et offered. Said the North Carolina senator: I would sc cure eo-opcratiou of the nations by bar ter and sale. In other words, I would pay them for their assistance iu cqualiz ing the value ol gold and silver by sharp trade discriminations. In this way bn gland, Austria and Germany would be soon whipped into hue. "These trade relations could be secured bv treatie-s with reciprocity clauses. In this way the absolute free coinage ol silver would be brought about. The plan is simple and feasible and would meet with popular approbation."
