4 ThursdaT Evening, December 8, 1892. THE ASHEVILLE DAILY CITIZEN ASHEVILLE DAILY CITIZEN Thb Daily Citiikn, Democratic, i published every afternoon (except Sunday) at the fol lowing rate strictly cash: Ons Yba Six Months 3 00 Three Months l g" Onb Month " Onbwkbk ls mm . - : t THE STATE VOTE. 5 THURSDAY, DECEMBER 8, 1892. In 1800 H. G. Ewart's vote in this Congressional district was 14.S51. Ac cording to the official count as published in The Citizen today, J. C. Fritehard received only U.5G0, or 201 less than Ewart. Crawford's vote this year was 31 votes more than two years ago. Tg?. "Now the dodgeries (latterly called sa loons) can set up their places of destruc tion wherever the proprietor chooses." A Lyceum Speaker. This does not quite tally with the fact that the County Commissioners refused at their last meeting to allow another saloon to open on South Main street. We have no doubt the saloon men think they are very badly treated. Concerning a recent disturbance iu the Jefferson Medical College, Philadel phia, it will strike the disinterested ob server that the faculty could put in a good half hour's work every morning relieving the students of their blunder busses. One would think a medical col lege would be about the last place where it would be necessary for a man to arm bimsell as though in an African jungle. Ik George W. Childs needed it lie would have assistance from every printer in the United States to help rebuild his burned building; but as lie does not lack for money he will have, what is better in his case, the sympathy of every member of the craft. Mr. Childs is one ol the noblest men that ever lived. His great wealth is given freely, and he lives as far above the air Gould dwelt in as heaven is above the other place, linn Tlins. Settle. Kenublican canrii date for Congress in the fifth district against Mr. A. H. A. Williams, Demo crat, notwithstanding the tact that the Democrats tried almost every coneeiva tn cheat biin out of his seat, has leceived his certificate from the State Board of canvassers. His majority is about 400. Heudersonville Times. It is difficut to see the least possible foundation in fact for the above asser tion. Mr. Settle's certificate of election was awarded him by a Democratic board on the face of the returns. Such charges will only damage the Republican party The Marion Record says that Rev Dr. Weaver "completely astonished our boys by proving, statistically, that the dogs of McDowell county were more ex nrnsp to the neoole than their preachers." We do not doubt it. The cur doc. of no use on earth, costs the State of North Carolina thousands of dollars yearly, It is incredible would be if the evidence were not before our eyes that intelligent communities would voluntarily tax themselves as the people ol North Carolina do to support what is worse than worthless. A CALAMITY HOWLER "The Mail and Express of New York reports this conversation with a Phila delphia manufacturer named Dolan "The manufacturer says: 'Here, boys. n'vr hci-n tret t ini? $ 14- a week, but then there was a wall up, so that the fellows on the other side of the wall, earning onlv $7.20 per week, couuin t compete o,ifh cnur labor. That wall is down now.' " 'But we can't work for such wages n. thnt ' renlies the American workman " 'Well, I'm sorry you can't,' answers h American manufacturer: 'but if you can't 1 can't run the mills. We must rinmn Thnt's nil there is to it.' An1 that's all there is to the tarifl nnootlnn " continued Mr. Dolan. "With the condition of American labor, the plane upon which our American people live, they will never submit to lowering it iithnnt a revolt. It would be hard for me, or you, or any oneclse to do so." It does not of course matter to Mr. Dolan or the Moil and Express that since the election more managers have in creased wanes than have lowered them he Duts out his sorry stuff just the same One would think that the United States was unable to compete with the world in anything that was not walled in by a high tariff, whereas Mr. Dolan's own city shows that asa rule the unprotected industries are doing better, and paving higher wages than the protected ones. The "wall" Mr. Dolan speaks of exists tor the workmnn only iu the former's imagination, for many parts of the coun try swarm with cheap imported labor, bringing the scale of wages down to, or almost to the English standard, which, by the way, is above the standard on continental Europe where protection rules without bringing wages up to the scale of socallcd free trade countries. Mr. Dolan is a calamity howler. Wanamaker'H BugtreHtlous. In his report sent to Congress Post master General Wanamaker makes the thi following suggestions : CFifty per cent, increase in free delivery offices, n saying of $1,000,000 on mail contracts and of $150,000 on stamped paper, 60 per cent, more of city distribu tions of trains; the sorting of mails in t.a-.it nn t-eet ran the three new kinds of postal cards and a new series of stamps, ana saier registry oi nun surer collection ol periodical postage.
