NEW 1 0RK, Jan. 29. An early decline waa followed by ralllea in th. cotton mar ket today with May contract selling up rrom 34.41 to 14.77 or about 17 point net higher. New crop month wart rel atively eaay, however, and there were re actions in the late trading with May clos ing at 84.62. The firmness of Liverpool seemed to make very little Impression at the opening and first price were un changed to 12 point lower. Liverpool wus a buyer, but there waa considerable scattured Belling for southern account aa well as some pressure from local and Wall street sources, which sent th more active positions about 14 to 27 points net lower during the early trading with March selling at 86.10 and July at 12.46. This decline reflected continued nervous ness over money market and general conditions .but the oilerlngs were com paratively light and the absorption of old crop contracts by Liverpool buyers dur ing the early session seemed to leave the market In a Bmer technical posi tion. At any rate, offerings were lighter during the middle of the day, nd price advanced rather sharply on covering with March selling up to 36.67 and July to 32.74 or 14 or 19 oolnta nut hlrher There was selling of the new crop months by houses with southwestern connec tions which prevented a response to the near month strength and the whole list anppea on several points in the late trad ing when the Immediate demand from sho.-ts appeared to have been supplied and there may have been some Ilquida- tiun un mo Kuvanc. in can money rate.
