Unlike the previous session, however, rsns were Inconspicuous until the later dealings when cotton carriers, trans rontlnentals and coalers came briskly forward. Speculative interest was most keen 111 the independent steels, also the motors, oils, coppers, rubbers and chemicals, with Intermittent activity In utilities, especially express com pany shares and People's Oas. Spe cific Instances a of strength were fur nished by 4 points, later reacting moderately, also Studebaker. the most active feature of the day, filoss Shef field Steel. Candler, National t,cad, National Blsuult and several of the chemical and fertiliser specialties. Sluggishness was shown by equip ments, sugars and minor food special ties but realations In those groups were moderate. Selling for profits detracted from the market's best price in the final dealings, but the closing was strong. The money market encouraged op erations for the long account, call loans opening and holding at i per cent against yesterday's maximum of g per cent. Time luans running from 30 too SO days were made at the further concession of 4 1-4 per cent. Foreign exchanges reflected the further uncertainties arising from Anglo-French relations. Sterling was s'lghtly lower and almost the entire range of continental bills eased from 3 to almost 10 points. Bonds were less active but firm In almost every division, notably Liberty and high grade railway Issues. Total sales, par value, were $17,755, 000.
