THE PENITENTIARY. AH INTKBESTUfG REPORT OX THIS INSTI TUTION. A gentleman writing the Wilmington Messenger from Raleigh says: "Your correspondent paid a visit to the peni tentiary Saturday and found it a yery quiet place indeed. There used to be hundreds of convict within the greU enclosure: now there are only 101. Of these fifty are in for life. Some time ago some life prisoners were worked outside the priseu, but this is net now aliowed. There are fifty female con victs, of whom nineteen are kept in the prison, and others being on the farm'. The convicts in the penitentiary make all the ciothing worn by all the prison era. 1.100 in number. They make aU the wagons and wheelbarrows used on the farms. There is a very tine garden just outside the great southern wall oi the ..prison, where an ample supply cf vegetables is raised. This garden joins the cemetery in which for twenty-five years convicts have been buried, and severai hundred little wooden head - 6tones wfciten the ground, lhe con- victs have in former years made a great many brick, but this year no work in this line is being done. There is a large supply of brick in the kilns. The shoes for all the convicts are made in the prison, though the factory which used to make shoes for sale is no longer op- eiated. There are washing machines and all the washing for th - student of the Agricultural and Mechanical col lege is done. The cloth used for sum mer wear br the convicts is made by the Pee Dee Mfe. Co. thai for winter wear being furnished' by ilheieer & C., of Richmond, Va. Many improve ments have been made at the grounds of the prisoa, Rubbish ha?, been clear ed away, the rough shedsj removed and the place made tidy. Stone cutting, which once employed so many men, is no longer done. After a time the wood en stockade in front of the building will be removed aud the grounds openedt The big buildings are even yet not quite complete. Cell tiers are not built in the west wing, which may all be used for workshops. It is only a question of time when manufacturing will be done inside the prison. It will not require a great expenditure to pre;. are for it. One 01 the odd things in the enclosure is a log building, now usd as stables, in which the convicts lived while they were constructing their more substan tial and imposing residence, of brick, stone and iron.
