The election of town officers will soon be at hand, and it is the duty of our people to nomi nate and elect only those who pledge themselves to manage the city affairs in a broad and pro gressive spirit. Personal con siderations should be set aside. Fitness should be made the sole test. In the selection of couucil meu the utmost care and vigi lance and labor should be exer- cised. At this time the city needs around the council board her very best men. And by the term "best men" wc mean those who are experienced, those who have shown their competency to man age their own affairs successfully, and whose standing and intelli gence is such as will enable them to deal properly with the city's financial interests and credit. Men possessing these qualifica tions are not necessarily rich men. Among us are many men of mod crate means who are good finan ciers and who would make safe city councilmen. Progressive men must come to to the front. Not men who will meet once a month to pay a few bills, &c, but men who at all times, are alive and at work for the town's welfare. It is true, under the recent amended char ter, by the "Douglass Legisla ture," there is but very little for us, but certainly enough to hits tie for, and unless we get a move on ourselves and do some real genuine hustling, we will not get this little, and the town gov ernment will be in the hands of incompetents. White men, do your duty to yourself, to your family and to your city. Don't dilly-dally get to work Kvery white citi zen of Kdenton who values his citizenship must go in to win. Our best, wisest and safest men must be the winners. It is claimed that skilled coun terfeiters have been making spurious two- cent postage stamps and that large quantities of them have been sold and used, the im itatiou being so near like the genuine that no one can tell the difference. Uncle Sam- is sadly out of pocket by the operation, and you can safely bet that he will make a most vigorous kick about it. The Pennsylvania Legislature has passed a bill doing away with the antiquated and silly custom of kissing the Bible when mak ing oath in court, requiring simply the laying on of the hand. As a mere matter of ceremony the kissing was useless and might be, under certain circumstances, dangerous. Ex. It is said that the advance in the price of meats is not in con- sequence of a combine but on ac count of the scarcity of beef. Whether this be so or not, it is a sufficient reason why the South ern farmer should raise his own meat. The Daily Washington (N. C.) Progress made its appearance for the first time Wednesday. It is a very credible issue and wc wish Bro. Jacobson success. Considerable excitement has been aroused in Raleigh and other towns by the summary dismissal of certain Seaboard Air Line of ficers and employees. The Missouri Legislature has passed a bill pensioning veteran school teachers who become dis abled by age or infirmity for con tinued service. The six per cent, interest law is in force. Raleigh banks are lending money at that rate, but are very careful. The recent Legislature gave Edgecombe county a negro mag istrate in every township but one. AS OTHERS SEE US. We are indebted to the E. City News for the following very complimentary notice: "The Fisherman & Farmer, of Edenton, is out this week in d bran new dress and all printed at hoine. There are no flies on Bro. Mitchell and we commend the euterpris : which gives Eden ton such an excellent new spaper. In the words of old Rip Van Winkle we say 'Here's to the Fisherman & Farmer, its edi tor and his family, and may they all live long and prosper." A RELIC IN DANGER. Washington Monument, on Mount Vernon Place, the first to be erected to the memory of George Washington, is succumb ing to decay. Architects en gaged to examine it, report find ing several large cracks in the base, and also that the marble in places is crumbling and disinte grating. They commended that a skilled chemist be engaged to devise means of preserving the marble after it has been re stored. The corner-stone of the monument was laid on the lourth of July, 1815, and it was com pleted in 1829. m A CHURCH IN HYDE. The first Missionary Baptist Church ever erected in Hyde county, was dedicated on Sunday last. It was through the efforts and good work of Rev. Josiah Elliott that this church was built. GOING TO NAG'S HEAD. Messrs. A. W. Spruill and A. B McCoy will remove next Tuesday to Nag's Head, at which place they will enter into copart nership and conduct a grocery business. NOTICE. John Henry Hines, a colored boy of 16 years of age, about five feet high, with birth mark on left side of nose, has left home without my knowledge and con sent, and I hereby give notice that all parties are forbidden of hireing and harboring him in any way. . Any particulars con cerning his whereabouts will be thankfully received, by his father Napolean Hixes. THE BOTTLING WORKS. The branch of the New Berne Bottling Works, H. Den neu burg, Propr., is now in operation in this city, and we bespeak for this new enterprise, the patron age of those who need anything in the line of Lager beer, Pops and other soft drinks. Orders from a distance will be promptly filled and shipped. See adver tisement in the next issue of this paper. It is said that the Sugar Trust is going into the distilling: ofj whiskey. Whiskey and sugar mix pretty well. There are more Baptist preach ers in the United States than of any other church except the Catholics. The figures are, of the former 3,637,421; of the lat ter, 6,231,410. A supposed incendiary fire de stroyed the barn and stables of the Odd Fellows' Orphanage, Friday night about 9 o'clock, containing a lot of forage and four hogs, causing an uninsured loss of about $2 so.- Goldsboro Headlight. EDENTON'S EASTER. The weather Sunday was great ly against the Easter bonnet. Storm shoes and coats, umbrel las and frequent showers were the order of the day. The beau tiful Easter costumes w.re con spicuous by their absence, and we doubt not, were laid away in domestic baud-boxes to await a more auspicious day. The serv ices at the various churches were well attended. j'Jie discourses especially fine, and the music simply charming. Altogether it was a most en joyable day, in spite of the in clement weather. MURDER AND SUICIDE A FORMER NORTH CAROLINIAN. BY Telluride, Colo.. April 16. Haywood Williams shot and kill ed Grace White, a woman of the town, this afternoon and then shot himself through the stom ach, inflicting a mortal wound. W illiams' father was Represent tative in Congress for two terms from Louisburg, N. C. Jealous ly was the cause. The tragedy took place in a house of ill fame. MINISTER RANSOM. Washington, April 16. Care ful inquiry here concerning the report that ex-Senator Ransom, Minister to Mexico, is not eligi ble to fill the place to which he was recently appointed, on ac count of a constitutional provis ion, finds the story without foun dation. Senator Ransom did not qualify until his term of office as Senator expired and his service and pay date from the time he qualifies. Senator Ransom's service as minister began when he took the oath of office and this was not until after his term as Senator had expired. THE CORPSE WALKED. A coroner's jury was sum moned in Couuellsville, Pa., to investigate the ciicumstauces at tending the death of Mrs. Jose phine Halliday. While the cor oner was swearing in the jurors up rose the supposed corpse and ordered them all out of the house. TPIE BEST ADVICE.
