Our learned Judge has des
covered undoubted proof of the
fact that John Smith and his
Englishmen were not the first
at Jamestown. Astonishing as is
this statement, Justice Clark has
apparently every proof, showing
that nearly 60 years before the
expedition of Sir Walter Raleigh
landed at Roanoke Island, and
.i years before John Smith
landed at Jamestown, the Span
iards made a settlement of the
identical laud that afterwards
was occupied by the English
as Jamestown.
This Spanish colony consist
ed of 600 persons, men, women
and children, with priests and
physicians, horses and cattle.

malaria. Civil war broke out,
and after a year the colony nam
ed San Miguel was abandoned.
Its very existence was unknown
even to Bancroft, but recent
researches in the royal library
at Fernando, in Spain, unearth
the records of his earliest and
unfortunate colony, which ante
dated St. Augustine by 40 years.

The fish hatchers are spawn
ing fish at Mackey's Creek. They
have quite a fine steamer, on
board of which about forty men
are at work hatching fish.
The lecture by Dr. C. S.
Blackwell last Friday liight was
a good one, so pronounced by the
large audience present. The
proceeds from same we hear
were satisfactory.

valuable horse last week by a
singular accident. Mr. Creek
more was putting the harness
on the horse when he became
enraged and kicked at him
(Creekmore) the horse without
his foot touching the ground,
broke his leg above the knee
protruding the bone through the
skin, The horse was rendered
useless and had to be killed.
