Mr. and Mrs. Frank Boley and Loyd Bryson were Toxaway visitors ASHEVILLE MAYOR IS OPEN MINDED ABOUT FRENCH BROAD DAM (From the Asheville Citizen) Mayor Wiekes Wamboldt today outlined his views concerning the proposal to build a storage dam on the French Broad liver. He said the, article which appeared in the Sun day Citizen-Times was misleading, and did net accuiatoly state his at titude. Mr. Wamboldt.’s statement fol lows : “The article in the Sunday Citi zen-Times of December 10, entitled: “Wamboldt Will Oppose Plan for Storage Doin’’ presents, in my opin ion, a complete misstatement of my attitude toward the proposed French Broad river storage dam as a part ci the TVA. “I told your leprercntativc that a delegation from Mills, River and litndcrsonville, headed by Mayor A. B Edwards uml Judge Justice of Hendersonville, had bten here to consult with me about this dani, and that we had talked the matter over pio and con, and that wc were open minded on the subject and were go irg to make further investigations. “I farther told your representative that among the advantages we could see in the project were these: “1. The spending of from 17 tc22 ore day last week. >. Hazel Moses spent the night Wed nesday with Mr. and Mrs. W. 3. Raines. Charles Lee spent Thursday night with Clarence Chappell at Oakland. Rev Clyde McCall of Quebec will preach at the' Lake Toxaway Bap tist church next Sunday. Dock Banther of Lake Lure CCC camp spent the week-end with his family. million dollars in this immediate vicinity. “2. The putting of a large number of unemployed men to work, taking up much of the unemployment slack in this locality, which we need done much more than other communities that have not been so looted by pub lic officials and greedy business inen that there is no public credit left with which to get projects financed 1 through the public works adminis tration. “8. The taking of about 40,000 acres of lard off the market and paying for it, thus enabling the own ers of the land to buy more land or to put the money into circulation otherwise. 1 “4. The creation of a magnificent lake in this vicinity. “5. And above all. the furnishing of electric current nt such low price ^ aa to attract industry and to enable, us to cook, light and heat with elec-| tricity, thus doing uway with Ashe ville's smoke nuisance. • | "I told your ix-prcserrUttive that( we had discussed the objections to( this dam, which were briefly as fol-. lews: “1. The covering up of o large! Amount of the most fertile farm land in this vicinity, and of the inur.dat ing of a part of Hendersonville un-, less adequate dikes were constructed.. “ 2. The creation of ar. unsightly and possibly unhealthy huge mud hole during those periods when the| lake was pulled down. “I further told your representa tive that unless power were gener ated at this dam so that the people rf this vicinity could get cheap cut rent, I would not be interested in it; and that, furthermore; if the gov ernment intended tc puli the lake down during our summer and tourist season, I would be opposed to the^ dam. . , ,, . 1 “The effect of your article on this dam story is to give the impression that 1 am generally opposed to the dam; that is not true. “I a9k that you kindly publish this statement.” HERE is an actual opportunity to make youe dollar do doable duty.
