P © RT PAGE Edited By John I. Anderson Rambling With The Sports Editor a NATIONAL RESTORATION WEEK ... All next week the local wildlife club will join in the national observance of Restoration week. The purpose of setting aside one week during the year as National Wildlife Restoration week is to focus attention of the public on some very real and important problems of conservation. Unless there is the understanding and sympathetic help of the public at large, no program of wildlife conservation can be made to work. Not every one is interested in hunting and fishing, and any attempt to “sell” the conservation of wildlife solely on the basis of increasing the opportunities for fishing or hunting would be a mistake. Every sin gle individual in the country, however, has a stake in wildlife—even though he has never shot a gun or wet a fishing line. Not only do many of our citizens get a direct benefit from wildlife and wildlife land through the recreational enjoyment of motoring, hiking, camp ing, nature study and other outdoor activities, but the indirect bene fits of a country that is made suitable for wildlife affect every indi vidual. This effect is evident in the price of food, clothes and houses. Everything that is a product of the land—from butter and wool to lumber and plastic—is affected by the same factors that make for good wildlife management. • • • • ON HIS OWN . . . Bucky Harris, manager of the Washington Sen ators, took time out last week end to talk about Gil Coan down at spring training headquarters in Orlando, Fla. “Gil is on his own this year, and all he’s going to get is encouragement. He’s still a potentially fine player and he’s going to get a chance to prove it his way,” said Harris. On his arrival here in Orlando last January, Clark Griffith, Nat presi dent, indicated that this would be Coan’s “make or break” year. “We’ve decided, Bucky and I,” explained the old gentleman, “to give the left field job to Coan at the start of the season and leave it with him. If he comes through I’ll be happy. It’s his until he shows us he can’t fulfill our expectations.” Previously Coan has had all sorts of advice. The Cubs once offered $100,000 for the North Carolinian whose feet have to be bandaged daily because he is allergic to Florida sand. This year, Harris says, nobody will show him how to hit until the handsome youth hits his stride. Then Harris, who was a plenty smart bucko at the bat himself, believes he can make Coan a .300 hitter. NAT’L WILDLIFE . S. “PURD” OSBORNE, prominent Brevard fisherman, brought home a 37%-pound channel bass from St. Augustine, Fla., last week end and a long fish tale. Mr. Osborne says the “whopper” was landed on an 18 pound test line, and he has his wife, Mrs. Mary Edwards and Sam F. Allison to prove his fish story. Fishing from a bridge near St. Augustine on Highway No. 1, Mr. Osborne got a strike and pretty soon most of the 180 feet of line on his reel was gone. Quickly his daughter added another 300 yards of line and most of it was used in the fight with the bass above. Finally, the local fisher man landed the beauty on a sand bar below the bridge. P.
