After the 13th, the books will be in the courthouse here, where property may be listed during the rest of January. The eight townships and their i listers, as released by Mr. Justus yesterday are: Brevard, Mrs. Gill Thomas and Miss Avaraie Glazener; Boyd, L. F. Lyday; Cathey’s Creek, Leander Gillespie; Dunn’s Rock, G. W. Max well; Eastatoe, Mrs. Beulah Han son; Gloucester, Allen McCall; Hogback, Cecil Fisher; Little Riv er, Mrs. Celia S. Boyd. The law requires all property, real and personal, shall be listed in accordance with ownership and value. Business and industries are required to file copies of their inventories. Any business con cern that wishes an extension, Mr. Justus said, would have to apply in writing and obtain consent from the board of commissioners be fore he could grant it. He pointed out that inventories must conform l to state returns. (International) Yule Business Hits Peak In Brevard, Survey Shows Some Stores Have 30 Percent Gain Better Spirit Of “Trade At Home” Reported; Prices Headed Upward A survey conducted by The Times revealed that Christmas bus iness here this year was the best ever experienced. This was at tributed by several merchants, in part, to the fact that shopping be gan earlier. The manager of one large food store here said his business would run a third ahead of last year. The manager of a department store re ported a gain of around 30 p$r cent for the season and other mer chants who gave no figures said that their gain was considerable. One store owner said he would like to be quoted as saying that there was a better spirit of “trade —Turn to Page Six FIRST BABY BORN IN COUNTY TO CRT VALUABLE GIFTS Local Merchants Offering Awards In Baby Derby To Parents And Infant A number of valuable gifts are awaiting the first white baby born in Transylvania county in 1951 and reported to The Times by midnight of January 2nd. These gifts are being offered by a number of Brevard merchants who are participating in an an nual baby derby. All prizes must be called for within 30 days after —Turn To Page Seven Construction Of Cellophane Plant Is Top Story Of 1950 In Transylvania The announcement from the Ecusta Paper corporation early in 1950 that DuPont would erect the $20,000,000 cellophane plant at Pisgah Forest is considered by The Times staff as the most important story of the year. Construction on this gigantic project is well underway at this time and the plant is expected to be in operation some time in 1951. In addition to picking the 10 top stories in Transylvania during the past year, the most significant news, as summarized in headlines, can be found on page five of the second section of this week’s Times. Second in importance in the opinion of The Times staff of out standing stories is the establish ment of radio station WPNF, which v/ent on the air on July 6. Third is the objection the citi zens of Transylvania made to TVA plans of flood control in the French Broad valley. This plan would have flooded large areas of valu able farming lands, and surveys —Turn To Page Seven WILL PAY $20,000 TO STOCKHOLDERS OF SAVINGS, LOAN Resources Of Association Now At More Than One Three-Quarter Million Semi-annual dividend checks totalling approximately $20,000 will be mailed the first of next week to the stockholders of the Brevard Federal Savings and Loan associa tion, it was learned today from Jerry Jerome, the secretary and treasurer. This brings the association’s total dividend payments for the year 1950 to $39,000, Mr. Jerome states. Interest is figured at the rate of two and one-half per cent annually. Resources of the company are over a million and three-quarter dollars, according to Mr. Jerome. He announces that the annual meeting of the stockholders will be held on Wednesday, January 17th. Mr. Jerome announced that all accounts in the association are now insured up to $10,000, this being double the protection previously provided. In addition to Mr. Jerome, the —Turn To Page Six LOCAL CONCERN TO SHOW MOVIE “Waves Of Green” Telia Story Of Century Of Pro gress In Farming “Waves of Green,” a great tech nicolor motion picture that vividly tells the story of how 100 years of teamwork with science and educa tion have brought American agri culture to its place in the sun, will be shown on January 9 at 7:30 p. m. in the Brevard high school auditorium. The picture was produced by Dearborn Motors and was brought to Brevard by Brittain Tractor company, local agents. Admission will be free and a capacity audi ence is expected to attend. Willis Brittain said yesterday that every person actively engaged in agriculture should see this film Among other things it shows how a rust-resistant strain of wheat was developed, how long-range plan ning conserved Missouri soil, how the soybean was brought to this country from China and developed into the country’s fifth largest money crop. -Turn to Page Six Final Plea Made In TB Seal Drive, Goal Is $150 Short A final plea is made today for all persons who have not sent in their contributions for Christmas TB seals to do so immediately. According to Dorothy Johnson, secretary of the local TB associa tion, only about one-third of the letters that were mailed out have been heard from. Returns to date total $550, some $150 short of the goal of $700. “We would greatly appreciate any and all contributions, and we want to assure everybody that their money will be well spent, and most of it will be expended right here at home in the treat ment and in the prevention of tu berculosis,” Miss Johnson de clared. Toxaway The county board of education lias given notice that it will receive sealed bids for the construction of new school buildings at North Brevard and Lake Toxaway. Plans for the buildings were drawn by Six Associates, Inc., ar chitects and engineers of Ashe ville, Supt. J. B. Jones reports. Bids may be submitted on either or both buildings and separate bids must be submitted as follows: gen eral contract, plumbing, heating and electric wiring. The bids will be opened at 10 —Turn to Page Six » Not One Local Person Was In Jail Over Holiday, Says Sheriff Freeman Christmas, 1950, was quietly ob served in Brevard and Transylva nia county with special services scheduled at all the churches and members of various organizations aiding in spreading Yule cheer to the needy. A number of parties were held in the community and the seren ity of the peaceful observance was interrupted three times by the fire alarm here, but no serious dam ages were reported. Not one local person was put in jail, Sheriff Bert Freeman re ports, however, four South Caro linians observed a part of the hol idays in the lodging house behind the courthouse. Only one automobile accident of any consequence was reported, and Harold Miller is in the Tran sylvania Community hospital as a result of injuries sustained when —Turn To Page SI* WPNF Program Highlights Prizes Offered Over WPNF To First '51 Baby, Broadcast Singing Convention WPNF is conducting its first Baby Derby this week, and with the cooperation of 10 local mer chants, the first born, boy or girl, in Transylvania county in 1951 will receive attractive and valuable prizes. Several announcements are being made daily concerning this impor tant event, and a special program is scheduled for Monday after noon, January 1, 1951, at 4:45 o’clock, providing the lucky baby has made his or her appearance in Transylvania by that time. Of interest this week is the an nouncement that one-half hour of the fifth Sunday singing conven tion at the courthouse on Sunday afternoon will be carried over sta tion WPNF beginning at 4 o’clock. Churches Scheduling Special Services; Much Interest In “Bowl” Games ACTIVITIES AT CLUB Following an extremely quiet Christmas, Transylvanians are looking forward to and planning1 for a similar observance as the old' year goes out Sunday night and the New Year comes in on Mon day. The stores in Brevard will be closed on Monday, along with the town and county offices, the bank and post office. Many persons are planning to attend special church services, and much interest is be ing expressed in the “bowl” games on the radio on Monday. A dinner with appropriate mu* sic will be featured at the Brevard Country club on Sunday evening and dancing will begin at midnight. Scores of smaller parties are also being planned in the community by individuals and groups. There will be no rural or city delivery on Monday and windows at the local post office will ob serve the holiday schedule and will be open from 10:30 until 11 o’clock. Many Brevard merchants are this week running New Year greetings in The Times, and Pub lished Ed M. Anderson urges all readers to read them with interest. On Friday After Observ ing Holidays All Transylvania schools will re open following the Christmas holi days on Wednesday, January 3, Supt. J. B. Jones said yesterday. Brevard college students will re turn from their homes on Thurs day and classes will resume the following morning. The public school vacation be gan December 20, and college stu dents left for the Christmas holi days on December 14. Repair work has been carried on in the schools during the holidays and remodeling of Dunham Hall is expected to begin in the near fu ture. President George B. Ehlhardt is spending the Christmas holidays with his people in St. Louis, Mo., —Turn To Page Seven Singing Convention To Elect Officers Sunday Afternoon Election of officers will be held Sunday afternoon when the fifth Sunday singing convention con venes in the courthouse here in Brevard, Gertha Shipman, the pres ident, announces. The singing will get underway at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon and a large number of outstanding singers and quartets from this and adjoining areas are expected to participate in the convention. Part of the program will be broadcast over WPNF beginning at 4 o’clock, the president states.
