Separated Twin# A Year Old ■m Cleveland’s Siamese twins—identified only as Nancy and Ellen— pose for the cameramen on their first birthday. It marks the first time i in medical history that both Siamese twins survived a year after their I operation. The children's mother, who asked that the family’s identity ’ be kept secret, said that the twins are normal in every way. The twins, weighing each about 18 pounds, have a brother, Barry, 3. The father of the trio is a music teacher. Straus wing of the Transylvania Community hospital, and citizens of the coun ty are urged to tour the expanded institution following the dedication Serves In Korea SGT. JAMES C. HOLCOMBE, *20, son of the Rev. and Mrs. Claude Holcombe, of Rosman, Route 1, has been serving with the armed forces in Korea since July last year. Prior to that time he spent a year in Korea. Sgt. Holcombe was trained at Fort Jackson, S. C., and has been in service since May, 1951. program on Sunday and see for themselves a hospital that com pares very favorably with the best in the country. As a person enters the new wait ing room, he is greeted with pleas ant surroundings, modernly design ed for comfort and ease, and the adjacent reception room and of fices are quite a transition from the old ones. Just down the hall other vast improvements were made in the expansion of the nursery, which now contains 16 new bassinets and an incubator. The hospital staff is most pleased with the obstetrical department, which is now complete ly separated from the operating suite. Both are completely equip ped. The rooms and the wards are furnished for every convenience and comfort of the patients, and a cheerful atmosphere prevails in the design of every room. There are furnishings and fix tures in the hospital which are un seen, however they play a most im portant part in the operation of the institution. For instance, the boiler room may go unobserved, however, it is equipped with two 30-horsepower, oil-fed boilers, hot water storage tanks and other necessary equip ment of the modern-day type. In case of a power failure, there will be an emergency gasoline pow ered unit that works automatically and gives service to the operating rooms and certain corridor lights.' On donation of one pint of blood, the donor will receive a card good for one year covering the blood needs of husband or wife, depen dent children and dependent pa rents, without obligation to replace the blood. All dire emergencies will be met without any obligation to the pa tient. Blood will be provided by the regional center in certain hardship cases. Would - be donors rejected for medical reasons will receive a card as if their contribution had been accepted. Employe groups and clubs where 35 per cent of the members give blood over a period of one year will have coverage for all members on a contract basis. A Gallon Club donor has a life time card of protection for him self and his immediate family, in cluding all present Gallon Club members. A repeat donor may dedicate his second card to someone else. A patient entering a hospital who does not have a card, in other than critical emergencies, will be asked to get a donor for each pint need ed prior to the scheduled operation on a basis of one-for-one replace ment in advance. The persons re placing the blood for the patient will receive credit cards and full family protection for one year.
