Slight Increase Seen Faculty members of the 13 schools in Transylvania for the school year 1953-’54 include 123 teachers and principals. This Ls an increase of six over last year’s total, and while it is doubtful that new teachers will be named now, additional ones can be secured during the first two weeks of school this fall if attend ance warrants it, Supt. J. B. Jones, states. There are 26 teachers in the two high schools of Transylvania and 94 in the elementary schools. The largest teaching staff is at Brevard elementary, where there are 34 teachers, including a full time music teacher, Mrs. Eva Gil lespie. Rosman also has a full time music teacher, Mrs. Maye Winget and Mrs. Ruth E. Hunter teaches music at Straus, Pisgah Forest and Penrose schools. John D. Eversman and Charles B. Glass teach band at Brevard high school. As of January 8, 1954, the Com modity Credit Corporation had out standing loans on 5,739,512 bales of 1953-crop cotton. r-—-+ Political ! Announcements ! MARVIN McCALL When you think of prescrip tions, think of VARNER’S. — adv. 112 Seniors Will Receive Diplomas At Brevard High School Next Tuesday A total of 112 students, the largest senior class in the history of Brevard high school, will receive their diplomas next Tuesday night. Brief sketches, prepared by the staff of the Broadcaster, are this week carried in The Times. They follow: HAROLD LEE AIKEN Harold, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Aiken, is well known around B. H. S. for his cheerful ness. For him we predict success. JACK LEWIS ALEXANDER Jack, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Alexander, is a handsome senior with brown eyes. Jack’s ac tivities include: Square dance team, Latin club, escort at homecoming, 4-H club and fire fighter. BOBBY EUGENE ALLISON Bob, the son of Mrs. Anna B. Al lison, is president of the Monogram club. He has lettered in baseball and is an active member of the Key club. ETHEL PATRICIA ALLEN Patsy, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Burlin Allen, is one of our basketball players, a member of he glee club, 4-H club, Dramatics club, Booster club and Monogram club. MARY LOU AUVIL Lou, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dent Auvil, is the girl with a. smile for all. She has been on the student council, office staff, cheerleader, Brevardier staff, and in the Huddle Queen court. PATRICIA ANN BANNING Pat, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Owen Banning, is one of the interesting personalities here. Her activities include: Latin club, glee dub, FHA club and Jr.-Sr. program. ELLEN ELAINE BARTON Ellen, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Barton, has been a friendly, cooperative girl to all. She has been active in the FHA, 4-H club and Library club and a member of the library staff. DARIS ELIZABETH BATSON Daris, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. U. G. Batson, has been a very active girl while in BHS. She is the president of Future Teachers club, FHA club, glee club secreta ry, homeroom officer, and she re ceived the Home Economics medal in ’52. PAUL WEXLER BAYNARD Paul, known to all as “Mustard,” is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Baynard. He lettered in football, baseball, and is a member of the Monogram club. He also went to the Optimist Bowl. JAMES EDWIN BISHOP Bud, the son of Mr and Mrs. Boyce Bishop, was our senior class president. His activities include vice president of student council, co-captain of football team, Opti mist Bowl, Lance Trophy, Brevar dier staff, Monogram club treasur er, vice president of FFA, Key club and student council. JEWELL MARCELLA BLANKENSHIP Jewell, the daughter of Mrs. George Blankenship, has proven herself to be a friend to all. She has been active in the FHA, 4-H, and Future Teachers clubs. JOHN PERRY BOLICK John, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Morris, is a hard worker and should go places in life. While in BHS John has played basket ball and been a member of the Monogram and Square Dance clubs. JAMES BUTLER BROWN J. B., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Brown, will be remembered for his good sense of humor and pleasing personality. He has been in the FFA club and a member of the FFA string band. SARA ELIZABETH BROWN Sara, the daughter of Mrs. Her man Brown, always has a ready joke to brighten the day. She has been active in the Square Dance club, Future Teachers club, 4-H club, an office assistant, and a member of the Huddle Queen court. BEVERLY JEAN BRYANT Beverly, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Bryant, is our talented musician. She has been active in the Dramatics and Latin clubs, as sistant business manger of the Brevardier, and plays solo flute for the school band. LOWELL VAN BRYSON Lowell, better known as “Lulu,” is the son of Mr. and Mrs. P. D. Bryson. He is full of mischief and loves fun. Lulu plays football, [ basketball, and is a member of the Monogram and Square Dance clubs. WINIFRED BUCKNER Winifred, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Buckner, is a quiet, well-liked girl. She has been ac tive in the Library club, 4-H club, and Future Teachers club. PATRICIA MAXINE BURNS Patsy, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jones, is an outstand ing and friendly girl who has been active in glee club, Journalism club. Broadcaster staff, Dramatics club, 4-H club, Future Teachers club and Square Dance club. JAMES GORDON BYRD Gordon, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Byrd, is a well-liked senior.
