But now it has been solved by at least two appliance manufac turers and a paint concern. One company with five “mix or match” colors for its refrigerators and oth er major appliances, has supplied the home owner with a similar col or range in paints. One is a high gloss porcelain finish paint design ed for refinishing kitchen appli ances. The other is a semi-gloss paint for walls, woodwork and ceil ing. The only kitchen appliance that cannot be refinished with the por celain paint is the electric or gas range and oven, because of the heat problem. The enamel and lacquer come in eight colors to harmonize with or match the shades of the concern’s 1955 refrigerators and electric ranges. The enamel may be applied by homemakers with a paint brush to tint enameled steel appliances. However, the concern suggests that the lacquer — which is designed for spraying on metal surfaces—be applied by a professional or experi enced painter. Shorts In Varied Lengths Popular For Summer Wear Shorts are going to be smart for the girls this summer, with long pants playing a minor role. Lucki ly, the new shorts come in all lengths from very short to knee touching Bermuda. One of the tricky, in-between lengths can be found to suit any type of leg. Shorts also come in many widths from flattering, full culottes to tailored little boy cuts. One smart-looking pair of short shorts of tomato red linen are lined and embroidered in white. A sleeve less red linen blouse is worn with it. Popular with many girls and women are the Jamaica length culottes, almost as full as a skirt, made of polished cotton. They come in a wide choice of colors. Gay play togs are a part of most big fashion showings. One number for fun under the sun is above-the ankle length pants printed in pok er-chip dots of red, green and yel low. Accompanying them are a green shirt and a yeoman’s jacket. Foreign styles shown here also reflect this gay note in sports clothes. For instance, Umba, an Italian designer with a fanciful off-beat approach to play clothes, is represented by reproductions of his Cotton tweed tapered pants in a mixture of rusty colors. Topping the trousers is a short flared tent of a jacket. The new tires have scuff-proof white sidewalls and the cured-in color extends from the white to the tread. Colors will not rub or peel off. Miss Gottschall believes these tires will par ticularly appeal to women, who will want them to match or blend with the shades of their cars. Cotton With Or Without Blends King For Summer Now that spring is here, lots of girls and women are very busy making their own clothes and ac cessories. Well, this spring the home seamstress has plenty of new materials and styles to work with. Just take a look at the wide choice of new fabrics, trimmings, and pat terns available. For spring and summer, 1955, cottons dominate the fashion pic ture, with more interest in woven novelties to supplement prints. The newest look to cotton is its sheer ness, featured in myriad shirtwaist dresses for all hours. Silks follow and blends that emphasize wrinkle resistant, pleat-retaining properties are in the foreground. Leading blends are silk and cotton, dacron and cotton, and orlon and cotton. One-piece cotton dresses are fa-t vored. Necklines ranged from high square cuts to deep backs and short sleeves to camisole sleeve less tops with narrow straps. And wide “frame” necklines are one of the many cool summer styles. All ocated skirts or straight skirts are significant types that play up the long look. The tunic is the newest interpretation of the long, lean 2 piece look for summer. With cottons taking the lead in the spring fabrics collections, wov en novelty cottons head the list. Typical of this treatment are prints worked out on checked gingham Patterned cottons ranging from bold stripes to delicate prints are other favorites. Cotton lace is very popular for late-day dress. And you’ll see—and probably wear — lace trimmings, such as val lace bands, Irish cro chet, and venetian-type lace collars. Not only the woman who does her own sewing, but the high-style designers as well, love to use cot ton this spring.
