Leather Care
In Handbags Will
Give Longer Life
Your leather handbags will be
more likely to last for more than
one season if you give them a thor
ough cleaning every now and then.
Besides, it will help to preserve
them and keep them looking like
new, as well.
A clothing specialist at the Uni
versity of Maryland, Lavonia Hil
bert, says that if leather goods—
handbags, wallets, pocket cases or
brief cases — are badly soiled they
can be given a soap suds bath. She
suggests making a thick lather of
pure white soap and smoothing it
on. After a few minutes rub off the
lather and polish the leather with
a clean flannel cloth.
When the leather is clean, use
lotion or cream suitable for keep
ing the leather supple. But Miss
Hilbert advises, “Whatever polish
or cream you use, rub it in well and
use it sparingly. If too much is
used, the specialist warns that dust
and dirt will collect and make the
bag more difficult to take care of.
You may find that saddle soap
used now and then will keep the
leather looking clean and new. Al
low it to remain on the leather ov
ernight and polish in the morning.
You’ll find that imitation leather
bags can be kept in condition by
wiping with a damp cloth. Then
polish with a soft dry cloth.
Brush suede bags with a rubber
sponge to keep them from getting
a “shine.”
Don’t allow your handbag to be
come a scrap bag. Carry only the
essentials for your needs. Overload
ing with unnecessary articles is in
convenient and causes the handbag
to lose shape.
Miss Hilbert suggests that as a
precautionary step, when bags are
not in use, it’s a wise idea to keep
them in a drawer to protect them.
Try using crushed tissue paper to
preserve the shape of soft leather
or fabric handbags.
Pep up your white sauce with a
little prepared mustard. You’ll find
that mustard sauce is especially
good with snap beans, greens and
cabbage.

LAZY DAISY — Cotton ace is
making big news for summer. It
has even invaded the beach and
sportswear field. Shown above is
Heatherlane’s pink over brown
beach jacket worn with match
ing cotton lace bloomers for the
more sophisticated young lady.
Lace trimmings are also popular
with summer fashions, especial
ly with the woman who does her
own sewing.
Asparagus With
Cheese Is Tasty
Perk up your springtime meals
by using foods that are colorful as
well as delicious. For instance,
green asparagus served on golden,
freshly baked cornbread squares
and topped with yellow cheese
sauce will make a big hit with the
family. Try it and see.
To serve, just split the corn
bread squares and toast them light
ly. Then top with spears of cooked
asparagus. Top with cheese sauce
and serve immediately.
Here's an easy-to-prepare cheese
sauce recipe which will give you
right servings: Use one-half pound
processed cheese — cut small or
shredded, with one-fourth cup milk.
Combine the milk and cheese in
the top of a double boiler over
boiling water. Heat, stirring until
smoothly blended, steaming hot.

Kitchen Colors
Now In Harmony
Matching or harmonizing the col
or of kitchen cabinets, walls and
appliances with a newly purchased
colored refrigerator or range is a
problem. But now it has been solved
by at least two appliance manufac
turers and a paint concern. One
company with five “mix or match”
colors for its refrigerators and oth
er major appliances, has supplied
the home owner with a similar col
or range in paints. One is a high
gloss porcelain finish paint design
ed for refinishing kitchen appli
ances. The other is a semi-gloss
paint for walls, woodwork and ceil
ing.
The only kitchen appliance that
cannot be refinished with the por
celain paint is the electric or gas
range and oven, because of the heat
problem.
The enamel and lacquer come in
eight colors to harmonize with or
match the shades of the concern’s
1955 refrigerators and electric
ranges.
The enamel may be applied by
homemakers with a paint brush to
tint enameled steel appliances.
However, the concern suggests that
the lacquer — which is designed
for spraying on metal surfaces—be
applied by a professional or experi
enced painter.
Shorts In Varied
Lengths Popular
For Summer Wear
Shorts are going to be smart for
the girls this summer, with long
pants playing a minor role. Lucki
ly, the new shorts come in all
lengths from very short to knee
touching Bermuda. One of the
tricky, in-between lengths can be
found to suit any type of leg.
Shorts also come in many widths
from flattering, full culottes to
tailored little boy cuts.
One smart-looking pair of short
shorts of tomato red linen are lined
and embroidered in white. A sleeve
less red linen blouse is worn with
it.
Popular with many girls and
women are the Jamaica length
culottes, almost as full as a skirt,
made of polished cotton. They come
in a wide choice of colors.
Gay play togs are a part of most
big fashion showings. One number
for fun under the sun is above-the
ankle length pants printed in pok
er-chip dots of red, green and yel
low. Accompanying them are a
green shirt and a yeoman’s jacket.
Foreign styles shown here also
reflect this gay note in sports
clothes. For instance, Umba, an
Italian designer with a fanciful
off-beat approach to play clothes,
is represented by reproductions of
his Cotton tweed tapered pants in
a mixture of rusty colors. Topping
the trousers is a short flared tent
of a jacket.
MAKE A STEW
A stew, prepared in advance, is
a good main course for the family
cn a day the homemaker is busier
than ever with spring houseclean
ing. If you want to keep a stew or
other food at the simmering point,
when you are cooking it over a top
burner on the range, make sure
that the surface of the liquid bare
ly ripples. Simmering means to
cook just below the boiling point.

COLOR IN TIRES is the latest thing to be designed by
women, who have brightened everything from kitchen
appliances to automobiles with their bright touches.
Shown above is Marcia Gottschall, probably the only
woman tire designer in the nation. She has developed the
U. S. Rubber’s blue, brown and green tires. The new tires
have scuff-proof white sidewalls and the cured-in color
extends from the white to the tread. Colors will not rub
or peel off. Miss Gottschall believes these tires will par
ticularly appeal to women, who will want them to match
or blend with the shades of their cars.
Cotton With Or
Without Blends
King For Summer
Now that spring is here, lots of
girls and women are very busy
making their own clothes and ac
cessories. Well, this spring the
home seamstress has plenty of new
materials and styles to work with.
Just take a look at the wide choice
of new fabrics, trimmings, and pat
terns available.
For spring and summer, 1955,
cottons dominate the fashion pic
ture, with more interest in woven
novelties to supplement prints. The
newest look to cotton is its sheer
ness, featured in myriad shirtwaist
dresses for all hours. Silks follow
and blends that emphasize wrinkle
resistant, pleat-retaining properties
are in the foreground. Leading
blends are silk and cotton, dacron
and cotton, and orlon and cotton.
One-piece cotton dresses are fa-t
vored. Necklines ranged from high
square cuts to deep backs and
short sleeves to camisole sleeve
less tops with narrow straps. And
wide “frame” necklines are one of
the many cool summer styles. All
ocated skirts or straight skirts are
significant types that play up the
long look. The tunic is the newest
interpretation of the long, lean 2
piece look for summer.
With cottons taking the lead in
the spring fabrics collections, wov
en novelty cottons head the list.
Typical of this treatment are prints
worked out on checked gingham
Patterned cottons ranging from
bold stripes to delicate prints are
other favorites.
Cotton lace is very popular for
late-day dress. And you’ll see—and
probably wear — lace trimmings,
such as val lace bands, Irish cro
chet, and venetian-type lace collars.
Not only the woman who does
her own sewing, but the high-style
designers as well, love to use cot
ton this spring.
ZESTY DRESSING
A delicious dressing for fresh as
paragus or green beans is easy to
make—and colorful. Just combine
1 cup of sour cream, 1 and one
half teaspoons of paprika, one
eighth teaspoon salt, one-sixteenth
teaspoon black ground pep
per, one-half teaspoon finely
minced onion and one and one-half
teaspoons lemon juice. Heat and
serve over cooked fresh vegetables.
HEALTHY VEGETABLES
Try to include a serving of green
or yellow vegetables in your meal
plan each day. You can get variety
in green vegetables with broccoli,
brussel sprouts, asparagus, greer.
lima and snap beans and green pep
per. Some yellow vegetables are
carrots, acorn squash, pumpkin and
sweet potatoes.

Today I’m going to give you some
unusual and wonderful casserole
dishes. Nothing is more convenient
than a casserole and, glamourized,
it can be a gourmet’s delight.
Lobster Newburg Casserole
1 lb. cooked lobster, diced
(use the frozen lobster tails;
they are ideal)
1-4 tsp. salt
1- 2 tsp. paprika
2- 3 cup sliced mushrooms
1 cup cream
3 tbls. butter
1-4 tsp. pepper
1 tsp. chopped onion
3 egg yolks
1-2 cup sherry
Combine butter, salt, pepper, pap

minutes over boiling water. Add
cream to egg yolks and heat well.
I Add lobster and wine to onion
j mushroom mixture and stir well.
I Place in casserole and add the
cream and egg yolk mixture; blend
well. Place in 350 degree oven un

triangles. It’s a real treat.
Here is another exotic casserole
from the Far East:
Calcutta Beet

peeled and chopped
3 tbls. curry powder

fluffy cooked rice. This is a new
taste thrill, believe me.
Sweetbreads aren’t everyone’s
choice, but properly prepared they
can convert the doubters. Here is
