The 4-H’ers had as their theme Jor their exhibit 4-H Projects and &4-H Activities in the local com munity. The 4-H’ers with Mrs. Mary Lou Rhodes and Ralph Mc Call, local 4-H leaders, were res ponsible for having a blue ribbon exhibit. Aside from the booth, some of the 4-H’ers exhibited some of their individual projects. Jane and Julia Shuford were awarded a blue and a red ribbon for their 4-H beef ani mals. Melvin Merrill was also awarded a blue ribbon for his 4-H dairy calf. Other members entered corn, poultry and sewing projects. The various 4-H clubs of the county met this past week at their respective schools. Officers were elected for each of the clubs and 4-H’ers were given a “4-H Project Selection Guide”, to help him or her select the project or projects they wish to complete during the coming year. This booklet, gives a description of the projects a 4-H'er may take. There are some 50 pro jects from which a 4-H boy or girl may choose. This year’s 4-H clubs consist of some 600 boys and girls with clubs in each of the schools of the county. SENATOR SAM ERVIN * SAYS * WASHINGTON — Recent Con gresses have seen a close numeri cal division between Democrats and Republicans. The 84th Con gress consisted of 49 Democrats and 47 Republicans. Close Division The general election on Novem ber 6, 1956, will determine the make-up of the Senate for the next two years. Of course deaths and resignations can change the politi cal complexion of a Congress when the balance is so close. The facts were interesting. A Century The 34th Congress took its seat ,in 1855. The nation had a total of 62 Senators at that time compared with the present 96 (two for each state in the Union). Of that total, 42 were Democrats, 15 were Repub 1 licans and 5 belonged to other par ties. The high water mark for Democratic Senators was in the 75th Congress (1937-39) with a to tal of 75; that Congress had 17 Republicans and there were 4 Sen ators listed as belonging to other parties. Lowest Ebb Democratic Senatorial power was at its lowest ebb with only 11 mem bers in the period of the War Be tween the State and Reconstruc tion; it was in the 41st Congress that the Republicans had 61 seats, and they also reached their max imum of 61 in the 60th Congress from 1907 to 1909. At the latter date there were 29 Democrats in the Senate. Recent Division The last Congress to show a con siderable political division was the 81st (1949-51) with 14 more Demo crats than Republicans. Since that time (the 82nd, 83rd and 84th) the political division has been very thin numerically. And when the time came to organize the Senate it was necessary for each political party to have every member pres ent. I will not discuss the political di vision of the House of Representa tives except to say that the present division shows 232 Democrats and 203 Republicans. The last time either body of Con gress was organized due to death was in the 72nd Congress (1931-33) when the House was organized by Democrats. Chips Are Down It can be seen that, as a conse quence of the close political divis ion in the Congress, no effort is being spared by both parties to control the Congress. It has also de veloped a greater awareness of the make-up of Congress among the people. Not only will November 6, gen eral election day, be important in the quest for the Presidency, but the voters will determine who will run the Congress for the next two years which will be the 85th Con gress.
