Brevard Rescue Squad Finds Rough Goi ng In Making Dramatic Rescue In Snow RESCUE SQUAD OFFICERS, Capt. Jimmie Rowe and Jim Beav ers, are pictured at the left with David Walker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Walker, as they keep him warm following a sled accident in Sherwood Forest Monday afternoon. The lad suffered a broken leg, and the squad members had a difficult time bringing him up the icy and snow covered embankment and down the road to an ambu lance. An overall scene of the accident can be seen at the right as Ed Sheehan takes a flat stretcher down to Rowe and Beavers. Jim Da vis, who also assisted in the rescue, is at the left. fTimiPsi Rfo-F-P David Walker Is Painfully Injured In Sled Accident, Sherwood Forest By The Editor David George Walker, the 11-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Walker, of Sherwood For est, was dramatically rescued by the Brevard Rescue squad Monday afternoon after crash ing his sled into a stump and over a 15-foot ice-covered em bankment near the sawmill in Sherwood Forest. His mother and her visitor, Mrs. Charles Pickelsiimer, heard his sereans and summoned the help of the rescue squad when they saw he could not move his legs. Capt. Jimmy Rowe and Jim Beavers were on the scene immediately, putting the leg in a splint and keeping the boy as warm as possible until an ambulance could plow up the icy road. The scene of the accident was about a mile and a half off US 276, and a large log across the road blocked the last portion ol the road. Other members of the Bre vard Rescue squad assisted Rowe and Beavers and approx imately an h-w after the crash, they had him on a stretcher en route to the local hospital. All during the ordeal, young Walker was a real trooper, and at times he smiled at the rescue squad members as they joked with him. He told this editor that he was coming around the curve before the crash making a ‘‘1,000 miles an hour”. Fortunately, he was wearing a football helmet, which probably kept his injuries from being more extensive. He is a fifth grade student at Straus school. During the rescue operations, we felt terribly sorry for Mrs. Walker. While rushing to the acci dent, she had fallen in a stream and she refused to leave the scene until she was sure her son was going to be all right. We know her feet were froz en. David’s father, who is em ployed at Du Pont, arrived just before the squad pulled the boy lip the embankment, and th< sons’ first request was, “Daddy, ride in the ambu lance with me to the hospital.” Now that David is in the cap able hands of the fine staff a the Transylvania hospital, W( know he is going to be splendid ly. And I know that he will saj a special prayer for the Bre vard Rescue squad. They handled the rescue with skill and understanding, and it’s a good feeling to know that we have such a well train ed organization in our com munity, ready to cope with any emergency at any and all times.
