Legion Special Awards Are Made, Legionnaires Are Thanked By - Staff Writer One of the highlight events, locally, of the 50th Anniversary of the American Legion was the recent Recognition dinner meeting of World War I veterans. I Legionnaires of the Monroe Wilson Post No. 88, paid tribute to the men who fought in the first World conflict at the dinner meeting. Some 60 legionnaires were on hand, and 19 of them were World War I veterans. Commander Don Culin is compiling a ros ter of Transylvania WW I veterans; and the list to date is carried on this page. Those attending the Recognition dinner were given awards in the form of a key chain holder, commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the American Legion. The commander was aided in awarding the awards by past ommanders, Bill Hampton and Bill Baughn. The delicious dinner was prepared by Legionnaire Dan Hawkins and his staff, and it was served by members of the Legion aux iliary. Brevard's popular mayor, Raymond P. Bennett, was a guest speaker at the meeting. Being a veteran of World War I, Mayor Bennett ably gave a historical background of the Monroe Wilson post. A life member and a trustee, Mayor Ben nett has played a prominent role in the pro gress that has been made both by the legion and in the community.
