Busy Weekend ’* • • -M I,. ■ —1 — Inauguration Ceremony For Davis Slated At College (PHOTO BY AUSTIN STUDIO) REV. ROBERT A. DAVIS The inauguration of the Rev. Robert Aldine Davis as sixth president of Brevard College will be held Saturday, May 2nd at 2:M p.m. The ceremony, to be held in the college’s Boshamer Gym nasium will highlight a week end of inauguration activities including the spring meeting of the Board of Trustees and the dedication of a new classroom building. The trustees will hold com mittee meetings beginning at 2:04 p.m. Friday, May I, ad journing to dedicate the Me Larty - Good son Classroom Building at 5:30. The new classroom facility was erected in 1969 and is named in mem ory of the college’s late presi dent, Dr. Emmett K. Mc Larty, Jr., and in honor of Bishop W. Kenneth Goodson, resident bishop of the Birm ingham Area of The United Methodist Church and a trus tee of the college. Members of the faculty, ad ministrative staff. Board of Trustees and their wives will attend an Inaugural Dinner scheduled for 6:45 p.m. in the A. G. Myers Dining Hall that evening. Speaker for the dinner will be Dr. Myron F. Wicke, General Secretary of the Divi sion of Higher Education of The United Methodist church. An Inaugural Concert pre sented by Brevard’s music de partment wiO foUow at 8:30 p.m. Featured presentation wiU be the world premier of “Abraham and Isaac”, a com position for chorus, soloists —Turn to Page Two Hearing On May 7th Petition Filed For Election At Local Olin Corporation Olin Corporation ha* been notified by the National La ' bor Relations Board that- the United Papermakers and Paperworkers union (AFL CIO) has filed a petition con cerning authority to repre sent employees of the Ecusta Paper and Film divisions at this location. This petition from UPP seeks recognition as exclusive bargaining agent In matters . of wages, hours and working conditions for hourly-rate em ployees in production, main tenance and supporting ac tivities. The National Labor Rela tions Board has scheduled a meeting between company, NLRB, and union officials for May 7th on this matter. This is the seventh attempt by unions to represent Olin employees at Pisgah Forest. On five of these occasions employees voted against union representation, and on the other effort there was not sufficient interest here to petition for an election. Grants From Olin Three BrevardV High Students Awarded Merit Scholarships Three Brevard Senior High school students have won Na tional Merit scholarships, it is announced today. They are: John D. Bolt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bolt, For tune Cove, Brevard. Stephen A. Spicer, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Spicer, Momingside Drive, Brevard. Wayne H. Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Miller, route 1, Pisgah Forest (Glade Creek road). The three scholarships that the local students won wen Olin Corporation Charitable Trust Merit scholarships. About Olin, the brochure on the winners and the donors of the scholarships said: Olin Corporation has manu facturing facilities in 54 U. S. locations and seven in other counties. The week’s high reading of 86 was on Thursday afternoon, while the low reading of 35 was last Wednesday morning. Weather Bureau extended forecast for North Carolina: Thursday through Saturday Chance of a few thundershow ers Friday and Saturday during the afternoons. Quite warm Thursday and most of Friday, turning somewhat cooler late Friday and into Saturday. Day time highs will average in the 80s while lows should average from 55 to 60. According to the U. S. Weather Bureau, the zone fore casts for the state of North Carolina will be broken down into 11 zones instead of the present four, effective May 1st. The announced purpose of this is to provide more accurate forecasts for specific areas. Forecasts for Transylvania County will be included in the “Central Mountain” region. This region consists of Madison, Buncombe, Henderson, Transyl vania and Haywood counties. Other mountain forecasts will be for the Southwest Mountains, ahtf Northern Mountains. The gang was working on Road 1103, near Connestee, when he escaped. The convict is said to be Billy Cornwell, of Murphy. He is a white male, five feet, six inches tall and weighs 145 pounds. He was wearing green prison clothes when he escaped. He is serving on a misde meanor charge. Anyone hav ing information as to where he might be hiding Is asked to call the Sheriffs depart ment or the Police Radio, 883-2212. Quality Mobile Homes district —Turn to Page Twt Both Parties To Nominate A Candidate For Sheriff Transylvania Democrats and Republicans will vote in the Primary election on Saturday, May 2nd. According to Admiral Ligon Ard, Chairman of the Board of Elections, the polls in all the 18 precincts will open at 6:30 a.m., and they will close at 6:30 p.m. Sample ballots are carried in section five of this week’s Times. Chairman Ard explains that while Robert Hunter and Robert Merrill are listed as opposing each other on the Democratic ballot, there is no contest in this race since Mr. Hunter has withdrawn be cause of business reasons. The ballots had already been printed when Mr. Hunter withdrew. Second Primary Should there be a second primary, it will be held on May 30th. The General Election is set for November 3rd. Interest in the Primary election is keen, and close races are predicted. According to Chairman Ard, the number of registered voters in Transylvania is as follows: Democrats _ 5,152 Republicans -3,089 American Party- 70 Independents - 584 Total 8,895 Three Republicans are en tered in the Republican pri mary for the Education Board. They are: William H. Huters, Margaret Surrette and Ken Nissen. There is also a Republican Primary in the race for Sher iff in Transylvania. The incumbent, Carter Mc Call, is being opposed by Jay B. McCall. Democrats also expect a hot race in the Democratic race for Sheriff in the Pri mary on May 2nd. Three men are in the run ning. They are: Milford Hubbard, Edward E. Killian and W. D. “Bill” Sawyer. Transylvania Democrats —Turn to Page Pivo On The Local Scene WPNF Will Carry Complete Returns Saturday Evening WPNF will hold a big “Elec tion Party” Saturday night. Local returns from the Dem ocratic and Republican primar ies will be reported from The Transylvania Times through the remote lines of the local radio station. Returns from the races in the district and across the state will be reported from the news room of WPNF, and the big “Elec tion party” will begin at 7:00 p.m. As usual, the staff of the Transylvania Times will gather and report the local returns from The Times. Other Programs The schedule for the Farm and Home hour is as follows: Thursday, U. S. Forest Service, Dan Hile; Friday, station pro gram; Monday, county exten sion chairman, Jerry Purser; Tuesday, N. C. Forest Service. Clark Grissom; Wednesday, Home agent, Miss Jean Chil ders. Speaking this week on Morn ing Devotions is Rev. Joe Reeves, pastor of St. Timothv Methodist church. Next week Rev. Ed Sheridan, pastor of the Sacred Heart Catholic church, will be heard.
