PROBLEM: Refraction of light.
NEEDED: A deep glass dish, flashlight and support,
mirror, water, milk, smoke, a slit in cardboard.
DO THIS: Set up the experiment as shown, so that
the flashlight beam goes through the slit and into the
water at an angle. A few drops of milk in the water and
a little smoke in the air will scatter some of the tight
so its path can be seen.
WHY DO THE RAYS BEND? The speed of light
varies in different substances, higher in air than in water.
Wl^pn the beam hits the water at an angle the si<jp near
est the water is slowed down first, the side farthest from*"
the water last. This causes the beam to bend, like a sled
when one runner hits sand while the other is on snow.
When the beam comes out of the water after reflecting
from the mirror, it bends the other way.
The mirror is placed in the bottom of the'dish, under
the water. The author used smoke from a cigar to cause
the scattering of the light in the air.

earnings now, considering the
number of full - time yean ii
the future I'll have to pay?
Will I really get my money’s
worth over the long run?
A. You and ether young
workers — part - time or full
time — are getting valuable
social security retirement,
survivors, and disability in
surance protection worth
MORE than the social secur
ity contributions you pay. If
you have 1% yean or more
of recent work on your social
security record, you and your
family may count on monthly
benefits if you become dis
abled. And your family would
get monthly benefits if you
died. Earnings of as little as
$50 in any 3-month calendar
quarter win assure you of
credit toward valuable insur
ance protection.
Q. A fellow sbident tells me
that social security has the
right to grant or withhold our
student benefits if our money
needs are adequate. Is he
right? I
A. No, he isn’t. Chances
are your friend has social se
curity mixed up with public
assistance payments, which
are based on actual need.
Your RIGHT to student bene
fits and the amount of the
payments are based on your
parent’s record of work—and
earnings — under social se
curity. Benefits are paid to
you as a matter of your par
ent’s EARNED right, with
out any test on need and
without regard to nonwork
income or other assets.
Q. I will not finish my col
lege work until I’m 23. Can an
exception be made to permit
me to receive student benefits
until then?
A. Sorry, but no exceptions
can be made to the age 22
cutoff for student benefits.
Ypur benefits art intended to

parent’s death, retirement, or
disability. The benefits are
intended to be paid as long
as it is reasonable to assure
that you dould be supported
by your family, The law sets
age 22 as the upper limit.
However, there are g number
of other public programs and
some private ones that offer
financial assistance to col

Q. If I don’t get my social
security check on the 3rd of
the month, what should I do?
A. If you have been getting
your checks regularly and
you know of no reason why
the check should be late,
notify your social security of
fice after the sixth of the
month. This allows time for
you to get the check if it was
delayed in the malL
If there might be another
reason for the delay, such as
a recent change in your ad
dress or other adjustments
in your records, wait about
two weeks; then let your so
cial security office know that
you have not received your
check.

13 Days
Of Shopping
Now Remain
Including today, we’d like
to be tke first to inform
Christmas shoppers that you
have exactly 13 shopping
days until Christmas. That’s
counting December 24th, too.
It’s a time for rejoicing,
mothers, fathers, for we
know you arc looking for
ward with much anticipation
to the numerous treks into
town, up and down the busy
streets, and into the crowd
ed stores.
But take heart! It will be
over all too soon for those
curtain • climbing, house
demolition teams we refer to
as “children.” Then it’s back
to school and once again out
of mother’s hair.
Shop Brevard first!
The number of veterans tak

“protective service” training
under the GI Bill increased by
90 percent during FY 70. Po
lice and fire departments inter

should contact their nearest VA
office; interested veterans
should apply at local police and
fire departments.

Christmas Vacation To Follow
Only six more days and read
ing day will be here. That also
means only six days until
exams begin because the first
exam is scheduled for reading
day night.
Those who have never taken
exams at Brevard College have
quite an experience coming
up. These finals run from the
tenth to the eighteenth of De
cember. They are scheduled
for three hours each. A stud
ent will often find he can fin
ish the exam in less than the
alloted time, but sometimes it
takes longer. Regardless of the
time spent on each individual
exam, the student is free to go
home as soon as he completes
his last exam.
Six days does no; seem like
much time to prepare for
exams; but for the student who
has kept up with assignments
all along, there is no real prob
lem. After exams, the Brevard
College students have a pleas
ure that many other college
students do not have and that
is three long weeks of vaca
tion without having to open a
book. That’s a real vacation.
Good luck on exams and Hap.
