The annual May meeting of
the Transylvania P-TA Council
will be held on Thursday, May
27th, at noon with a dutch
luncheon.

arranged for the program mem
bers on Thursday, May 20: at
3:15 p.m. to the Carolina Tire
Company, and 7:30 p.m. to the
Lyda-McCrary Ford Company.
All members of this special pro
gram are urged to attend a
special visit since study helps
on the contest will be given.
4-H Movie
All 4-H members are spon
soring a movie at the Co-Ed in
Brevard, starting May 10th and
lasting until May 22nd. Nine
showings will be shown, so all
persons will have at least one
chance to see this film—THE
WAR WAGON—a comedy west
ern starring John Wayne and
Kirk Douglas.
Prices for admission will be
$1.25 for adults, $1.00 for stu
dents, and 75c for children.
The money will be used in
the purchase of a 4-H Youth Ac
tivity Bus, so the youth in Tran
sylvania County can attend ed
ucational functions and field
trips. Tickets are available now
from 4-H members.
Revival Begins

Phillips Rites
Held Wednesday
Carroll Jay Phillips, age 28,
of Brevard, died early Monday
morning in a local hospital fol
lowing a long illness. Mr. Phil
lips had been employed by the
A. P. Thomas Farms for 12
years.
Surviving are the widow,
Mrs. Mary Tinsley Phillips;
three children, Ricky, Penny
and Tracy Phillips all of the
home; his mother, Mrs. Nina
Phillips of Little River; six
sisters, Mrs. Margaret Gravely
and Mrs. Wanda Owens of Bre
vard, Mrs. Ruth Bingham of
Thomasville, Mrs. Anne Owens
of Lake Toxaway, Mrs. Hazel
Allen of Illinois, and Mrs. Min
nie Jane Holden of Etowah;
four brothers, J. D. and Jessee
Phillips of Penrose, Clyde Phil
lips of Pisgah Forest and Sher
idan Phillips, of the U. S. Army
in Korea; and a number of
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday at the Enon Baptist
church. Reverend Tommy Owen
and Reverend Forrest Blanken
ship officiated, and burial was
in Pisgah Gardens. The Young
Men’s Sunday School Class of
the Enon Baptist church served
as pallbearers.

Several Courses
To Students
The Extension Division of Blue Ridge
Technical Institute and Transylvania County
Schools announce four class offerings at Brevard
Senior High School starting in June. For the first
time, some classes are open to students under 18
years of age.
Two reading classes will be open to all
adults and to any student who is a rising high
school Junior or Senior, or who is 16 years of age
or older. There will be no fees or tuition, however,
a textbook may be required. Reading classes are
as follows:
Reading for Comprehension and Speed
Meets five days per week for two weeks,
8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
Begins June 7 — Ends June 18.
This course is designed to provide the
student with the techniques of reading that will
aid the individual in understanding subject matter
those that desire emphasis on reading comprehen
sion.
Reading Acceleration
Meets Mondays and Thursdays, 6:30 to
8:30 p.m.
Begins June 7 — Ends July 1.
This course is designed to improve reading
speed and reading techniques. Comprehension,
retention and vocabulatory are developed through
group and individualized instruction. Emphasis
will be on reading speed and retention.

Personality, Charm and Poise
(for women)
Meets Mondays and Thursdays, 6:30 to
8:30 p.m.
Begins June 7 — Ends June 24.
This course, to be taught by Mrs. Nickcol
(Nicki) Kordik, a former model, and a former air
line stewardess, is open to high school graduates
or any adult who may be interested. It is designed
to assist women in developing techniques of per
sonality, charm, and poise as an aid in getting a job,
in getting advancement in a job, or for personal
satisfaction. Subjects covered will be walking,
sitting, dressing, make-up, etc.
Algebra and Math Review
Meets Mondays and Thursdays, 6:30 to
8:30 p.m.
Begins June 7 — Ends July 29.
This course is for students who plan to at
tend a technical institute, college or university in
September and need a review in math and algebra.
It is open to any adult who would like to “brush
up” on high school algebra and mathematics. All
students who plan to attend a technical institute
and have not had algebra should attend this
course.

The annual Awards Banquet
of The Brevard Little Theatre
will be held Thursday night,
