•0 4-H Bicycle Program Combines learning And Fun How about a bike hike? It’s the thing to do, you know. It’s wonderful exercise, produces no air pollution and it’s fun for the whole family. An indication of the growing popularity of the 4-H bicycle program is seen in the enrollment statistics. During 1970, some 135,000 4-H boys and girls participated in the program supervised by the Cooperative Extension Service. Sponsored by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, the program is designed to teach young people between the ages of 9 and 19 care, maintenance and safe operation of the bi cycle and the fun opportunities of cycling. Kids learn the rules of the road and ordinances of the community pertaining to bi cycles and bicycle riding. And they gain appreciation of these laws for personal safety and courtesy to others. There is an added bonus here as most of the laws concerning correct bicycle riding also per tain to driving an automobile. Today when “having a set of wheels” is no longer a luxury, these young people will move easily to the driving of a much more powerful piece of equip ment. But before that day comes, a bicycle is providing more and more young people with ftin', mobility and exercise. Rules of the road are but one aspect of the “learning by do ing” 4-H bicycle program. The young people al'o learn how to repair, adjust and take care of their equipment. They also learn to judge when a job is too big for them to handle alone and whe na reliable serviceman should be consulted to keep their bicycle in safe working condition. 4-H Swipe Growers Provide Quality, Low-Calorie Produce Today when everyone is “thinking thin,” many people avoid pork in their diet even when they enjoy its succulent taste and inviting texture. They needn’t! Today’s hogs are, jwt at at} the same as the amqSJ* of a7. Hew years back. “In fact, today’s hogs yield just half the lard <Sf thbsfe 20 years ago. Ahd a 3% ounce pork chop now has only 240 calories, compared with 377 two decades ago,” ac cording to the Cooperative Ex tension Service. There are over 106,000 youths between the ages of 9 and 19 who are helping provide this high-quality pork for America’s table. They are the young peo ple enrolled in the national 4-H swine program sponsored by Moorman Mfg. Co., Quincy, 111. The swine program, supervised by the Cooperative Extension Service, gives young men and women, the opportunity to learn about breeding, nutrition, research and marketing of hogs. They also may make a profit when they market their ani mals. This year’s National Pork Queen, Miss Patricia D. Cline, 20, of Pleasant Plains, 111., worked nine years in the 4-H swine program. She and her older sister maintained a herd of purebred Spotted Poland Chinas until Patricia entered college with profits from the hog projects. Topping the list in incentives and recognition offered by Moorman Mfg. C'o., national 4-H swine program donor, are six $700 educational scholarships, an increase of $100 each over the previous year. The company also offers an expense-paid trip to the National 4-H Congress in Chicago, November 28 - Decem ber 2, for a winner from each state. And up to four medals of honor are offered io promising young swine growers in each county. In 1970, 43 states qualified for expense-paid trips to 4-H Congress and 2,000 counties awarded some 5,700 medals of honor. Last year’s scholarships were awarded to young men from Colorado, Minnesota, Mis sissippi, Oklahoma and Pennsyl vania, and to a young lady from Oregon. Fore more information about the 4-H swine program, contact the county extension office. Venezulelas Equine Encephalomyelitis I am sure that each of you are now aware of the serious concern .within the horse in dustry created by the outbreak of Venezuelan Equine Encep halomyelitis in Texas. Because this disease poses a threat to both man and animals, it is doublely critical. Because of the potential ser iousness of this disease, we en courage owners of horses, mules, ponies, etc., to consult a vet erinarian should any of their animals show signs of sick ness As a part of the national preparation for controlling this disease, each state is being ask ed to obtain an accurate census <if all equine species in that For Rubber Stamps state. North Carolina already has such a survey underway. The Office of the Statistics Di vision of the Crop Reporting Service has sent out survey forms to individual owners to obtain this information. Ev eryone who receives one of these forms is asked to please complete it and return it promptly. The date obtained from this census may be the basis for allocating vaccine supplies should the disease spread into this area. Tomato Notes 1. Tomato Blight — Up to this date tomato blights have not been serious in most cases. Growers should use a Maneb type fungicide (Manzate D; Di thane). 2. Botrytis Blight — This is another disease which can be- controlled by sprayihg with Dyrene, and should be applied when the di sease first appears.
