C. THURSDAY, OCT. 7th loeGfon#' MtEAMXG SKtl VICE Thomas A. Reynolds, Dealer 7 Biltmore Ave., Asheville, N. C. 1 The Children's Bookshelf -By DR. JOSEPHINE J. CURTG From all the advance pub licity on books slated for pub lication during the next three months it would seem that read ers can expect top-notch books written by well-known authors. This month, from Macmillan comes another Lawrence Prin gle book, “Ecology: Science of Survival” ($4.95). Similar in format to his highly-praised and thought-provoking account* “One Earth, Many People,” Mr. Pringle’s new book promises to be as timely and as lively-writ ten as his other one. Written specifically for the junior-high student, this com prehensive introduction to ecology will, if it equals its predecessor, be filled with maps, charts, illustrations, and photographs, and be written in the unmistakable Pringle style —simple, direct, and interest ing. Also from Macmillan and slated for immediate publica tion is another modem classic by the author of "One Monday Morning”, 1969 Caldecott win ner, Uri Shulveitz. ueraiaea as a lamasuc pic ture book” lor ages 3 to 6, “Oh What a Noise”', ($4.95) is a fresh look at an age-old topic: a little boy trying to postpone going to bed. Imagining a cacophony of sound that includes, among di verse and amusing things, whales in the bath tub, the little boy almost succeeds in staying up late. Promising to be both colorful and humorous, “Oh What a Noise”, will also be a book that teachers of young children will find valuable in teaching sounds and pronunciation. —☆— Good news for young readers who were enthralled by the highly-successful “Marcel Mac ceau Alphabet Book”. A lively follow-up to this colorful and instructive picture book is George Mendoza’s full color “The Marcel Mareeau Counting Book”, (Doubleday* $5.95). In this enchanting picture bq^k, the great Mareeau por trays a series of occupations from astronaut to king, wearing a hat appropriate to each. And if this second Mareeau book is half as successful as its prede and will be entertained as they learn. “The Crocodile Who Wouldn’t Be King”, a statement about peaceful coexistence and one’s individuality in a complex so ciety, by the popular Germsp writer Janosch; and “Hercules”, a dramatic picture book by author-illustrator Hardie Gra rnalky. —☆— A September release that no teenager or his parents should nnss is “Go Ask Alice”, (Pren tice-Hall, $4.95). A documen tary novel, based upon the ac tual diary of a 15-year-old drug user, “Go Ask Alice”, offers no solutions to the drug problem; however, it does detail the nightmarish horrors experienc ed by the young girl who rea lizes too late that drugs solve no problems, only create great er ones. Shocking, pathetic, and thought-provoking, “Go Ask Alice”, for obvious reasons, does not reveal the author. But any young person who has “freaked out” on drugs will know that the story is true— else how could the young au thor know the problems and dif ficulties resulting from taking drugs? C. Walter Hodges, the well known writer and critic whose “Shapespeare’s Theatre” re ceived acclaim in theatrical and literary circles, updates the classics for readers ages 8 to 14. “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner”, Coleridge’s dramatic poem, and ‘The Pied Piper of Hamelin”, Browning’s well known classic, are Mr. Hodges’ first of, hopefully, a series of classics. To be released in Oc tober by Coward-McCann, each of these favorites includes, along with the original text, Mr. Hodges’ highly-original and colorful illustrations. —☆— A closer examination of the advance publicity on books shows that animal stories, bi ographies, mysteries, and sci ence books headline fall publi cations with fantasy, problem solving fiction, and “how-to” books ranking second. One bit of disturbing news, though. Poetry and drama for children seem to have been overlooked. In fact, from all releases and fall catalogues, it would appear that poets and playwrights took a vacation last winter in that only two-poetry anthologies and one collection of plays for children are slated iblication within the next of months.
