nksgiving Dinner Set At Sapphire-^^Tiitewater By - Wallace Brewer . SAPPHIRE - WHITEWATER < — The Sapphire - Whitewater community club will sponsor a Thanksgiving dinner at the community center on Thursday, Nov. 25th, at 2:00 p.m. Marian Condon, Chairman, requests that those attending to please let her knou. Her box number is 44, Sapphire, 28774. While the community club has previ ously sponsored Christmas and Easter programs for the youth and covered dish suppers, this is a first for the community. Fifteen persons have already indicated a willingness to at tend. Steady progress is being made on Horsepasture River’s new bridge and a short detour js present at the site. Trees and underbrush are being cleared along the new link of White water Falls road. Mr. and Mrs. Oakley Farver were visitors of Marian Pardee at Western Carolina Sana torium at Black Mountain last Tuesday. Sapphire residents were sad dened to learn of the death of Bruce Bosier, of Sarasota, Fla., » former visitor to Sapphire and one of the very first promoters of selling home sites at Bear wallow. A retired Railway em ployee, he was often seen with a camera in his hand taking pic tures of local waterfalls, with Bearwallow Falls on of his favorites. He was instrumental in ob taming many signatures of sum mer residents that own property on Bearwallow Drive in grant ing a 60-foot right of way along the six-tenths of a mile that connects U. S. Highway 64 at the Bearwallow Jelly House with Whitewater Falls road. Mrs. Bosier preceded him in death some two years ago. His daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Dann, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, plan to retire at their home at the foot of round top mountain, “Half-Way House” within two years. Mr. and Mrs. Claude Henry of Walhalla, S. C., were recent guests of Mr. and Mrs. Coleman Lyda of Whitewater. The Lydays accompanied by two of their granddaughters, Sharan Kenney and Darla T.yda visited in Brevard on Saturday. Gary Brewer of Cherrifield was a Sunday evening visitor of three of his brothers, Harry, Ronald and Wallace and the Neil Lyday family on Sunday afternoon. Weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Eric Thomas and daugh ter, Michelle, were the former’s father and mother and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Thomas^ and daughter, Nancy of Bakers ville. Mr. and Mrs. Rick Hall and daughter, Derema, of Black Mountain, were also guests during the weekend. Mrs. Hall is a sister of Mr. Thomas. Little River News: Home Destroyed By Fire Saturday By - Mrs. George Hudgins LITTLE RIVER — Members of the Little River Extension Homemakers Club and other friends joined together and gave the Paul Cantrell family a real nice box of groceries last week to help them through their unexpected trouble. Paul is in the VA hospital and is ex pected to be there for at least a year and his son Jimmy has undergone surgery in Pardee hospital in Hendersonville. They will be taken care'ttf and I am sure that everyone that has a part will be blessed. Early Saturday morning the home known as the Gill Merrill place was destroyed by fire. It had recently been purchased by the Harley Owenby family. They were away from home at the time and nothing was saved. There are two men and two women in this family and their needs are great. At pres ent they are living in Alvin Mc Crary’s trailer. A stork shower was recently held in the fellowship hall at Little River church for Mrs. Freda Hamilton Pressley of Brevard, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton. She received many useful gifts, and the group enjoyed the games and refreshments. Randy McCrary had surgery Monday in Asheville hospital for injuries he received Satur day afternoon in a conference football game at Enka. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles McCrary. Others on our sick list is Harry Kilstrom, Jim Barton, Weaver Cordell and Ruby Mc Kelvin. They are all home from the hospital and improving. Mrs. Ellen Orr is spending a few weeks with her son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Dale On in Knoxville, Tenn. Mrs. Judy McClure had her grandmother, Mrs. Hester Moore from Carton visiting with her over the weekend. Visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Alton Braddock over the week end and attending worship ser vice with her Sunday morning was her grandson, Mike Reulf and his friend, Ernie from Emory College in Atlanta, Georgia. Visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Bill Brown over the weekend was Mrs. Brown’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Green from Franklin. Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Shook and family from West Asheville visited Harry Kilstrom Sunday evening. Newton Pickelsimer left Sat urday for New York where he joined a group that will tour the Holy Land. We wish him the best of luck. Mrs. Merrimon Shuford, Mrs. Carl Whitaker, Mrs. James Austin, and Mrs. Lucille Gar ren are among the group from Transylvania county who are on ■tour to the UN. Mr. and Mrs. Morris Hawkins and Mr. and Mrs. Newton Pick elsimer attended the U.F.B.D.A. meeting at the Holliday Inn in Asheville last week. The Little River Extension Homemakers meeting will be Wednesday November 24 in stead of our regular time and will meet with Mrs. Spencer Walker. Family Dollar Stores Announces Record Sales And Earnings, 1970 Leon Levine. President of Family Dollar Stores, announces record sales and earnings for the fiscal year ended August 31, 1971. Sales were $27,453, 198, up from $17,703,944 in the 1970 fiscal year, an increase of $9,749,254, or 55%. Net earn ings rose approximately 56% to $1,661,810 or 83c per common share on the 2,000,000 shares of common stock outstanding, compared with $1,067,088 or 53c per share for the fiscal year 1970. Mr. Levine also announced that the Company’s expansion program is continuing at a rapid pace. A total of 26 stores were opened in this fis cal period resulting in 95 stores in operation at August 31, 1971. Since then, the Com pany has opened an additional 7 stores and now has 102 stores in operation.
