r * » ♦» News From Transylvania 4-H Clubs Do four Shopping In Brevard This Christmas Last year nearly 200,000 youth were enrolled in the 4-H horticultural program. Immedi ately we can picture huge mounds of tomatoes, potatoes or squash as we try to compre hend how much fresh produce this must be. But not neoessarily the case! Supervised by the Coopera tive Extension Service and sponsored by Allis-Chalmers, the program means many other things to a large group of those enrolled. To some youngsters the program is a windowsill flower box bringing real live nature to a high-rise apartment. And to others it is a campaign against environmental pollution as they participate in commun ity beautification activities as part of the horticultural pro gram. And even those who plant gardens may be growing flow ers or ornamentals rather than vegetables. The 4-H horticultural proj ects means many things to many youth and might be "right” for you! Contact your local 4-H of fice today for more information. Teens Learn To Be Smart Consumers Youths today have more to spend than ever before. It is estimated that in 1970 boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 19 spent nearly 21 billion dol lars. They bought 50 per cent of the soft drinks consumed—90 per cent of the single photo graph records — 44 per cent of all cameras — 27 per cent of the cosmetics — and 9 per cent - of the new automobiles. Where and how do they learn -to make wise buying decisions? How do they decide what is the best quality for their money’s -worth? Over a million and a quarter teenage boys and girls are find ing that an excellent place to get buying know-how is by par ticipating in the 4-H consumer education-home economics pro gram, sponsored by Montgom ery Ward, and supervised by -the Cooperative Extension Serv ice. The program encompasses all phases of consumer education in projects directly related to -the home, such as clothing, foods, home improvement and home management, family life and personal development.
