. ■erette C. Carnes Announces For Re-Election •wdge Everette C. Carnes announces that be has filed as candidate to succeed himself as District Court Judge for the 29th Judicial District of North Carolina. The 29th Judicial District is composed of Henderson, Ruth erford, Polk, Transylvania and McDowell Counties. Judge Carnes was appointed in Aug ust, 1970, by Governor Robert W. Scott, upon the recommen dation of the 29th District Bar Association, to succeed Judge "Forrest Robertson, who had re signed. Prica to ascending the bench, Judge Carnes had practiced law in Marion since gadua tion from Wake Forest College School of Law in 1948. He is a member of American Bar As sociation, American Judiciary Society, North Carolina Bar As sociation and is a former Pres ident of the 29th Judicial Bar Association. He is active in civic, social and church affairs. A Methodist, he taught in the Church for many years and is presently Lay Leader of his home church, Marion’s First United Methodist Church. He has served as President of the Marion Rotary Club, President of Marion Civitan JUDGE CARNES Club, President of McDowell County Chamber of Commerce, Chairman MdDowell County Chapter, American Red Cross, McDowell County District Chair man, Boy Scouts of America, and in many other capacities. He is married to the former Margaret Rachel Pagei of Lum berton and Raleigh, and has two sons. Fire Destroys Home Will Hold Sharing For Owen Family At Balsam Grove, 27th Mr. and Mrs. Odell Owen and family of Balsam Grove lost their home and personal items in a fire February 13th. The residents of Balsam Grove will hold n sharing at - the Balsam Grove Commun ity Center February 27th, at at 2:30 p.m. Anyone having any dona tion, please come by he Cen ter the 27th between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. Brevard College Students To Collect Glass And Newsoaoers On Saturday,. February 26th, students from Brevard College will be campaigning in the Bre vard Community for clean, dear glass, magazines and newspaper. All recycled material donat ed will be taken to Asheville and the proceeds will be given to the Brevard College Bus Fund. . The students are attempting to raise $15,000 to purchase a new 25-passengcr bus to be used in all off campus activi Started during the Thanks giving holidays, the Bus Fund has already passed the $4,200.00 mark, mainly through dona tions. This will be the first fund raising project by the students. A drop off point will also be available at the main en trance to the College for those in the community who would rather bring their contribu tions to the college. Anyone with a large contribution should contact the college to insure pickup. Cedar Mountain Community Club Will Meet Next Tuesday Night By - Mrs. Nancy Logan Mrs. Baby Skerrett CEDAR MOUNTAIN — Ole Man Winter hit Cedar Mountain once again this past weekend. Accidents, a ski ride in Mark leys field and sled riding are just a few of the many events that came with all the white snow. Some were pleasant and others, well, not so! The regular monthly meeting of the Cedar Mountain Com munity Club will be held on Tuesday, February 29th at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is urged to be present for this meeting. A special meeting of all De partment Directors of the Rocky Hill Church Bible School has been called for Sun day evening, February 27, be ginning at 5:30 p.m. The meet ing will be held at the church. Mrs. Alvin Jones, Director, asks that all department leaders be be present for this important meeting. Weekly Bible study is held every Wednesday at Rocky Hill Baptist church. The book of Revelations is the topic of study now being taught. Everyone is invited to attend. A Valentine’s Party was held at the Center on Sunday night, February 13, and was sponsored by the BTU of Rocky Hill church. A covered dish supper was a big part of the party. A real good time was had by all those attending. All Girl Scouts of Cedar Mountain will meet at Rocky Hill Church next Monday after noon to practice for the Girl Scout Sunday program. To all you Brownies, Juniors and Ca dettes don’t forget this meeting! Mrs. Ellen Lee is back home after a stay at the Bapist Hos pital iiv Winston-Salem. Bill Jones has also returned from California, where he was in the hospital there. Mrs. Helen Fowler of Green ville visited her mother, Mrs. Nellie Jones on Saturday. Many of our residents have been confined to their homes with the flu. There are too many names to print them all, but to all of you, we hope you are feeling much better. Lydays Attend Convention In Washington Two Transylvania county con servationists were among the 3,000 national leaders in en vironmental protection and re source development meeting February 13-17 in Washington, D. C. at the 26th annual con vention of the National Asso ciation of Conversation Dis tricts. Mr. and Mrs. Randal J. Lyday attended as representatives of the Transylvania County Dis trict. Mr. Lyday also represented the State Watershed Commit tee. Major speakers at the con vention included Congressman Jamie L. Quebec Community Club Meets, Party Set For Saturday Night By - Mrs. Paul M. Fisher QUEBEC—The Quebec Com munity Club met February 14th. Bennie Fisher, President, presided over the meeting. Fi nancial matters were discussed. Work has been steadily pro gressing on the Community Building, and we hope to soon be using it. Plans were made for a bingo party to be held Saturday night, February 26. A food sale will begin at 6:30 and bingo at 7:30. Everyone come out and support your community. George Henderson came home Saturday. Feb. 12 from Phila delphia, Penn., to spend a few days with his family. George is in the Navy. When he returned to duty on Feb. 17, he went to Newport Rhode Island. Congratulations to Bill and Myrtle McNeely on the arrival of their baby boy. Little William Lee McNeely, III, arrived on February 7, 1972 in Raimelle, West Virginia, where the Mc Neelys are now residing. Bud Sitton has reurned home after a period of hospitaliza tion in Asheville Memorial Hos pital. We are glad ■ to report that Mr. Sitton is recuperating very well from his surgery. The friends of Mrs. Verdery Sanders wish to extend our deepest sympathy to her in the loss of her brother.
