Harrington Little Items of Lively Interest About Folks and How magnificent are the flow en of May! Azaleas and Rhododendron lead the way. With Peonies, Phlox and Irb oh so dear— And the colon of Sweet Wil Mam bringing cheer. There’s Sweet Rocket and Ox nils blooming too, And many trees and shrubs flowering anew. Green, green everywhere ia like an emerald gown From the highest trees down to the grassy ground. May holds so many, many won drous from God’s hand, And I give thanks for this green and flowered land. —Neva Taylor Harrington May brings golden hours, for the sun this month begins to feel like summer. It’s an ideal time to enjoy flowers at our homes, to ride about and see the wold flowers in meadows, along roadsides, and in wood lands. Enjoy the flowers! Gardening: FUCHSIAS are coming to the fore again, they are absolutely beautiful in ev ery way. Give them a filtered shady place, protected from hard winds, and you have a flower that will capture your heart. Use them in hanging baskets, patio planters, or any place that you have will suit their cultured requirements. The versatility and opulence of fuchsias will be a delightful change over many of the stand ard flowers grown. They are different, and they are exotic. Mrs. Engent Tinsley, 67 Caro lina Ave., has the grandest col lection. Why not drop by and see Them? Fuchsias bloom all summer just covered with the exotic blooms. Then, before frost, if you’ll carefully move them in doors to a northern window,' you’ll enjoy fuchsias all winter. Some varieties I like are: ' “Brilliant”, large flowered with scarlet sepels and an extra broad, violet purple bell-shaped corolla ... “.Lena”, ideal for hanging baskets is pink and mauive . . . “Mrs. Popple”, large flowers with carmine se pels and deep - violet corolla . . . Thompsonii, small flowers in great kuantity, with ruby red sepels and rich violet—pur ple corolla . . . There is one that is all pink, so lovely, that I have been unable to secure the name. As to culture of fuchsias: They must have well drained, good loamy soil in shade, whether grown in pots or out doors, they will not thrive in wet, clay soil. There are Hardy Fuchsias al so, that may be planted out-of doors in a protected, shady area, which will winter over. I have one that has been by my rock wall in a semi - shady 1 - place for twenty years. Ea< fall alter frost, I cut it bat i almost to the ground, and late as the ground freezes, I place ■ mulch of compost leave around it fur - collar fashioi ■ I watch for severe aero fofn casts, and in that case, I ct branches and lay loose] around and across the clump to ward off the severe weatt er. i Might I suggest you try fr chsias for a change — and fo real pleasure. Flower Spotlight: I just mus urge everyone again to ride b; Mr. and Mrs. Don Jenkini home and see the fabulous ant spectacular show of Rhodo dendrous at 123 Maple St. (TIm garden is seen from Rice ant Johnson Streets.) Magnificent Fringe trees cat be seen at two homes on the Rosman Road, at Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Morgan’s and at Mr. and Mrs. Merritt Galloway’s. At Mr. and Mrs. James Cob Crane’s, Cherryfield, the love liest vivid pink azaleas and deep velvet blue iris. So long, gardeners! When in need of job printing call The Transylvania Times. ARE YOU FAT?
